INFOGRAPHIC: How Algorithms Changed The World

Mankind has seen many kinds of inventions that have transformed the world – the telephone, the television, the motor car, the aeroplane, the Internet….but sometimes, some of the best and most groundbreaking inventions are the ones you can’t really see. The ones that are silently plugging away in the background, doing their thing, the ones you don’t really give a second thought to.  One of them is the algorithm and you would be mistaken if you thought the algorithm started with the Internet.  In fact, it started long before Mr J Christ of Bethlehem appeared on the scene, turning water into the local Chardonnay.

Our infographic today, courtesy of CollegeDegreeSearch.net, examines the progress and evolution of the algorithm, from 300BC, all the way up to the present day.  Did you know that the Euclidian algorithm from 300BC is still used today?  Or that the Quadratic algorithm from the year 820 is also still used today? These days, algorithms are the backbone of the Internet, used in search engines to deliver relevant content (including Google PageRank), and computer operating systems.  They are also used in GPS systems and military hardware (smart bombs and encryption codes).

Let us know in the comments what you think of today’s infographic, and if you can think of any other instances where algorithms are used today.
