A number of participants have been trying to convince me to move the discussion forum (=> group) to Facebook. I'm kind of in the fence here, so I figure I'll just open this up for discussion; let's face it, in Israel practically everyone uses Facebook, which creates a lot of visibility over the Google group, but then it's a far less rich discussion platform.

What do you think?

Some of the best engineers I know in Israel (seriously) do not use facebook and you'll surely loose some audiance.
imo the platform is not ideal for typical technical discussions where you paste code and sometimes have long text.

So you may increase engagement by might loose on the content and participance quality.

Though I have and use a facebook account, I do not use it for anything technical,
it is for silly stuff and friendly updates. I treat my facebook notifications accordingly.
I actually like the format of google group for these types of discussions, and am in several other similar groups(different topics).
from a feature perspective I also like google groups, I can control easily how I get the infromation only forum form or various types of emails,
I often will switch the way I access a group several times during it's lifetime, I can also easily categorize the mails from the groups in my inbox.
I have a clear preference to the current form.

open google groups discussions are searchable using google, its a way to have people interested in a topic discovering the group. discussions on facebook are not open up the search engines

I despise facebook, and use it only when forced to, but on a more technical note, google groups are better archives.

I think there's a fairly obvious consensus at play here. If someone wants to start up a Facebook group to see if it gains traction I wouldn't personally mind, but I don't think it'll work very well for the reasons already outlined above.
