thanks Jiryu - I agree that we need to study at a certain point in our training... will try to read this thoroughly when I can...

Well, I posted by mistake Sensei. I was not through.
I have found in researching modern Theravada some surprising things !
However, the main point is to be able to use it for something or someone not just for the sake of knowing it !

Jiryu-san,

I also find value in learning from the Pali Canon; however, I find it incredibly difficult to navigate on my own, so I have to rely on commentary from practicioner-scholars like Stephen Batchelor.

Recently, while perusing Zenku's library, I saw he had a copy of:

In the Buddha's Words: An Anthology of Discourses from the Pali Canon (Teachings of the Buddha) by Bhikkhu Bodhi
http://amzn.com/0861714911

I looked through it and saw that it has collected a great deal of the material from the Pali canon in a condensed, organized fashion I can understand, thus allowing me to study without having to find my way through it myself. I ordered a copy for myself and look forward to reading through it.

Kosetsu

I also find Bikkhu Bodhi very clear... don't know anything about him, however.

Kosetsu -San, I like Bikkhu Bodhi a lot also. You can find a lot of his translations on line.
WHat I found refreshing in some of what I read from commentaries on the Pali Canon by theravada monks is that ehere really are among them people who deeply question their traditional views. There seems to be actually some srious controversy among them, for example  in the interpretation of Dependent Origination.

I bet you will like Buddhadasa Bikkhu :
