Plot

The film begins with a young woman named Kalyani (Srividya) giving birth to an illegitimate child. She abandons the child in a goods train, which is found by some slum dwellers. They name him Surya (Rajinikanth) and raise him as their own. Surya grows up to be a brave and loyal man who protects his people from the local rowdies. He also befriends a young man named Arjun (Arvind Swamy), who is an orphan and works as a collector for a local don.

Surya falls in love with Subbulakshmi (Shobana), a college student who is the daughter of a police officer. Arjun also falls in love with Padma (Bhanupriya), a widow who runs a school for slum children. Surya and Arjun decide to leave their violent lives and settle down with their respective lovers. However, their past catches up with them when they cross paths with Devaraj (Mammootty), a powerful don who controls the city's underworld.

Devaraj is impressed by Surya's courage and loyalty and offers him to join his gang. Surya accepts the offer, hoping to earn enough money to start a new life with Subbulakshmi. Arjun, however, refuses to join Devaraj and remains loyal to his boss. This creates a rift between Surya and Arjun, who become rivals. Devaraj also faces opposition from his own brother-in-law Kalivardhan (Jaishankar), who is a corrupt politician and wants to eliminate Devaraj.

The film reaches its climax when Kalivardhan hires an assassin named S.P. Bhargav (Amrish Puri) to kill Devaraj. Surya learns about this plot and tries to save Devaraj, but is shot by Bhargav. Arjun arrives at the scene and kills Bhargav, saving both Surya and Devaraj. Surya and Arjun reconcile their friendship and decide to leave the city with their lovers. However, they are stopped by Kalyani, who reveals herself to be Surya's biological mother. She begs Surya to forgive her for abandoning him and asks him to come with her. Surya agrees to go with her, but asks Arjun to take care of Subbulakshmi. Arjun promises to do so and bids farewell to Surya.

The film's score and soundtrack were composed by Ilaiyaraaja, who collaborated with Mani Ratnam for the sixth time. The soundtrack consists of five songs, which were written by Vaali in Tamil, Veturi Sundararama Murthy in Telugu and P.K. Mishra in Hindi. The songs were well received by the audience and critics alike. The song "Rakkamma Kaiya Thattu" was ranked fourth in a BBC World Top Ten music poll conducted in 2002.
