The Toyota RAV4 was redesigned for the 2019 model year. The Toyota Venza was re-introduced to the market as a small SUV in the 2021 model year and shares the same platform as the RAV4. Driver-side small overlap frontal ratings are assigned by the Institute based on a test of a 2019 RAV4 conducted by Toyota as part of frontal crash test verification.

The passenger's space was maintained well in both tests, and in the Institute's test, risk of injuries to the dummy's legs and feet was low. (Risk of injury to the left lower leg was moderate in Toyota's test).

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is an independent, nonprofit scientific and educational organization dedicated to reducing deaths, injuries and property damage from motor vehicle crashes through research and evaluation and through education of consumers, policymakers and safety professionals.

The Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) shares and supports this mission through scientific studies of insurance data representing the human and economic losses resulting from the ownership and operation of different types of vehicles and by publishing insurance loss results by vehicle make and model.

The first results of the new vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention testing program, aimed to encourage automakers to improve crash avoidance systems, were announced on Tuesday by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a nonprofit financed by the insurance industry.

The Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 garnered an acceptable rating; the Ford Escape, Hyundai Tucson and Jeep Compass earned marginal ratings, and the Chevrolet Equinox, Mazda CX-5, Mitsubishi Outlander and Volkswagen Taos were rated poor.

The updated test addressed crashes that occurred at higher speeds - of up to 43 mph -and for the first time evaluated how well they detected stopped motorcycles and large trucks, in addition to passenger cars.

Tests were run at three speeds with each vehicle type. The new evaluation reflects a much greater proportion of police-reported front-to-rear crashes, including many that are more severe, researchers said.

The new Dodge Caliber, a small wagon, earned the top "Good" rating for front impact protection, but was only "Marginal," the second worst rating, for side impact protection, in spite of having head-protecting side airbags.

In the latest round of tests, however, the Lincoln Zephyr, the luxury brand's entry level model, earned a rating of "Acceptable," the second-best of four possible ratings, for both front and side crash protection.

"This is not a bad rating," Insurance Institute president Adrian Lund said in the announcement, "but all of the other midsize luxury cars we've tested get 'Good' ratings for frontal crash protection, so the Zephyr isn't competitive in its class for safety."

None of the vehicles in the latest round of test results earned a "Top Safety Pick" designation because none earned a top rating in all three areas of crash protection including whiplash protection from rear impacts.

"Front and side crashes usually are more serious, but rear impacts are more common and the neck injuries that result can be debilitating," said Lund. "This is the most common injury reported in motor vehicle crashes."

The Insurance Institute's front impact test involves an offset impact at 40 miles per hour. The vehicle strikes the barrier with just one side of its front end, so impact forces are concentrated in a relatively small area.

Because of the height of the barrier, vehicles without head-protecting side airbags do not perform well in the Institute's side impact test. Even some vehicles with those types of airbags still do not do well.

To measure rear impact whiplash protection, the Institute measures the height and shape of the headrest to see if it would, theoretically, protect an average sized man. If the headrest is judged to be "Good" or "Acceptable" according to that test, it is then further tested in a 20 mph rear impact using a crash test dummy.

The institute said that its research and evaluation rules are playing an increasingly important role in improving China's automobile safety and quality. Safety is a top priority for car buyers, thus safety results from the institute are important indicators for car buyers when choosing vehicles.

Fang Zhongyou, chairman of the institute's test center, said the models evaluated covered traditional gasoline vehicles and new-energy vehicles, taking into account joint venture brands and domestic brands.

The institute said it invited professors and experts in the field of automotive safety technology and standards in universities and the automobile, insurance and other industries to review the results to ensure they were professional, objective, fair and just.
