Uncompahgre Watershed Partnership
September Newsletter

Greetings all! Here is your monthly newsletter from the UWP!

Updates:

The Rollans Park Riparian Health Improvement Project was a success! In the beginning of August, the UWP partnered with the Town of Ridgway, the Southwest Conservation Corps and Ouray County Weed Control to re-vegetate Rollans Park in Ridgway, CO. Thanks to cottonwood donations from Ridgway State Park, 22 trees were transplanted around the stream bank of the Uncompahgre River. Thank you to our wonderful volunteers from the community, and our great SCC Crew! Also, thank you to Mountain Market for lunch for all of our volunteers. Visit www.uncompahgrewatershed.org for photos!

The Mining Committee met this past Monday on August 27, 2012. If you would like to be more involved and informed on mining issues in Ouray County, please contact uwpv...@gmail.com

Upcoming Events:

Bird Walk and Banding on September 15, 2012: Ridgway State Park is hosting their annual Bird Banding Event on Saturday, Sept. 15 from 7-11am. The UWP, in partnership with Kent Nelson from Ouray, CO, will be leading a bird walk at 7:30am to 9am along the interpretive trails in the park. Although the river is low and recreation is limited, there are still dozens of beautiful bird life that thrives in our watershed! This is a great opportunity to learn about Bird ID'ing and bird habitats. We will be meeting at the Confluence of Dallas Creek at the Dallas Creek entrance of the Ridgway State Park. After the bird walk, you're welcome to join in public bird banding! For more information, please visit http://www.blackcanyonaudubon.org/education.htm, or e-mail uwpv...@gmail.com

National Public Lands Day is September 29, 2012. The UWP will be celebrating on September 28 with the Ouray County 4th Graders. Thanks to the NPLD organization, the students will be testing water quality in the Uncompahgre River in an effort to teach local history and encourage appreciation of our public lands and waterways!

Late September: the UWP will continue working with Ouray County Weed Control to complete the re-vegetation of Rollans Park. We are seeking volunteers to help broadcast a native seed mix, stake willows and lay down biodegradable aspen fiber along the east side of the River.  Lunch and a light breakfast will be provided for volunteers!  The date of this project is largely dependent on the weather. If you would like to be involved in this volunteer effort, please e-mail uwpv...@gmail.com, and we will keep you posted on the timeline of the project.

Thank you all for all your support! Please visit our website for more information on past projects and upcoming events: www.uncompahgrewatershed.org

Have a great September!
