Filament feed gear

Received my replacement feed gear and after installing it and an all metal hot end my filament comes out super smooth and even. In other words it works perfect. :-)

Alright I spoke too soon. I thought it was all smooth and perfect until I tried to print and when I did I found that the gear slips on the filament really bad. Basically it thumps, I think it has to do with the heating of the new hot end, it seemed great at first but now it doesn't seem to melt easily which is causing it to require greater pressure to extrude. This is the hot end I purchased -> Micro Swiss MK10 All Metal Hotend Kit .4mm
Any help would be greatly appreciated because I'm at my wits end here.

It's fairly common to need to increase extrusion temps with the all-metal hotend, I've read. Some have reported needing a 10°C increase. So, if you were previously printing at the low end of the range for your filament especially, you may need to bump up the extruder temp.

I'm interested to know what you find. I'm in the middle of doing the same two upgrades and plan to finish tonight.

One more question about the upgraded filament feed gear:

Is it recommended to put any fixative (e.g. blue threadlocker) on the set screw? 

Since the feed gear isn't keyed to the flat on the stepper drive shaft, I'm worried that the set screw might back out over time and cause slippage. 

Thoughts / recommendations?

Well it may not be keyed to the flat but that's exactly where I set it on mine. It seems to sit perfectly well and stays set without any sort of thread locker or anything. I think I got my problem sorted out, I hadn't tightened down the nozzle enough after installing the new hot end so some material got between the threads keeping it from getting hot enough. So after cleaning everything out with acetone(luckily it was abs) and applying some of the thermal compound to the threads I seem to be printing just fine again. Also remember to heat up the hot end before tightening the nozzle down as the instructions state to do.

Thanks for the guidance, Rodney. Glad you got your issue sorted out, too.

Looks like I'm going to wait another day or so to reassemble, since I ordered the new slotted cooling block for the M-S hotend. We'll see how that goes.

Some persons have had great success with the all metal hot end and others have switched back to the OEM ends. In either case ABS requires muck more heat than PLA.
