Hello, all –

 

 

When you go to the wiki pages and then open any of the ‘discussion’ sections on the pages there – it’s full of links to pornography.  So for several days I deleted those links / cleaned those pages.  But it just pops up again.  So I don’t feel like doing it any more and I don’t want to be the person who goes to clean up the porn as my focus for your efforts   ;o) .  So you might want to do something about that because it’s offensive, and not what your site is about.

Thanks for pointing this out.
 
Those are wiki spam and its something we will have to manually weed out constantly.
 
Its not difficult. It just needs a little investment of time every few days to check the pages and week out any spam.
 
Can someone in our team take up the role of 'Wiki Captain' -  a person who will oversee the health and maintenance of the wiki?

once you guys decide on the pages that will be active, i will start tweaking a few bots and let them loose on the wiki with sids help, i think that will help prevent vandals to a great extent.

ok... but any takers to be a wiki captain??? However, I'll to delete these spam pages as I come across them. I know this is such a pain in the a** to manually delete these spam things... but there is no other option... v gotta do d dirty work... pls delete the spam ones as u come across... lets keep it clean...

can't we just put a captcha on the wiki  ? wouldn't that solve it ?

I’m ready to take up the role. But, I can’t clean it up very often.

 

The max I can do is once in a day.

 

Some tips to make patrolling easy.

 

1). Create an account, Login and edit. This will reduce the number pages that need to be patrolled.

 

2). Put proper comments while saving a page. This will avoid the need for patrolling the anonymously edited pages.

 

I guess categorizing pages is not done. That will help in easier page navigation.

 

And to make the patrolling and wiki gardening easy and better, I need sysop rights.

 

Can the administrator give it?

It's awesome that you have come forward to be the wiki captain. 
 
Did you say once a day?  Tha's a luxury. Even if you clean things up once in couple of days is good enough.   
 
Kausik is the guy who set up the wiki and hence the default administrator I guess.  Kau, can you please give Jaggy the full SysOps rights? 
(I will also mail Kau separately in case he misses this thread)
 
Good pointers on keeping the wiki clean.

no henritte... it might not... some automated scripts r really clever enough to pass these capcha (ofcourse exception here is akismet).... a human-assisted moderation is a must...

well then it just puzzles me that both Mediawiki and pmwiki uses capcha for moderation ?

isn't a capcha a picture and hence scripts can't read it ?

Manoj, I think henriette has a good point. 
 
We should try Capcha.  It usually is pretty effective against spam. Let's give it a shot.  We'll never know until we give it a try.

I’m yet to get the sysop rights I requested.

 

Without sysop rights I cannot revert the changes made by spammers.

 

I can just remove the crap, that’s it.

 

We may lose some important discussion.

 

Please, do the needful in this regard.

 

And with no of pages growing steadily, pages needs to be categorized.
