So everyone and their grandmother knows WEP is insecure and out-dated,
but I suspect several of us have hardware that doesn't support WPA2.

like ifconfig is useful for ethernet connections, iwconfig is useful
for wireless configurations. Here's the basic format:

iwconfig eth0 essid ssidGoesHere
sudo iwconfig eth0 key hexKeyGoesHere

Then, if you don't want to wait, restart the eth0:
sudo ifdown eth0
sudo ifp eth0

thanks for the info Mike. As the newest newbie there is, I'll have fun
playing with this!

Welcome to the group, Dave :)

I was sleepy when I posting this - the last line had a typo:
>...
> Then, if you don't want to wait, restart the eth0:
> sudo ifdown eth0
> sudo ifup eth0

You can use iwconfig without any parameters to view your current
wireless settings:

$ sudo iwconfig

eth0 IEEE 802.11b ESSID:"ssidNameHere"
...
... Encryption key:HEX:CODE:HERE...

...and ifconfig to display your current network address:

$ sudo ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:E0:63:50:49:AD
inet addr:192.168.1.129
....

And of course 'man iwconfig' displays more comprehensive information
about the use of this command.
