"My father, Norman Innes is on the left of "Soccer Team" photo with his hands on his hips. I do not know the other names?
The ball tells us that it is a "LOCO TEAM 1921" . The 1921 could be a LOCO shed number, and not the date, not sure of that one thought.? However, the photo would still be in the 1920's. A stamp on the back of the photo reads "Photo by A. Howat Umtali". I would say it is an Umtali Raylton team. My father was 22 at that time. Does the building not look like a typical railways office building! The other 2 photo's "0001 & 0002" I feel are also out of the 20's. The only name I have is my father's - Norman Innes, and I have no idea of the venues.?
I would say that 0001 is the earlier photo, I see some similarity of faces in both photos. Dad played most of his representative soccer in the 20's, early 30's for SR, Mashonaland, Salisbury, and Umtali Caleys. The playing fields in the one photo appear extensive with what look like rugby posts in the back ground. My father worked for Rhodesia Railways since arriving in the country early 1920's. Mostly in Umtali where he retired mid 50's as Machine Shop Forman. He played soccer for Southern Rhodesia, Mashonaland, and Salisbury all in the 20's so the photos could be around any one of those teams. The photo of the team in front of the building is definitely by an Umtali photographer. It could be a Railways team or the Umtali Caleys who dad played for and captained in 1930. Wow, I guess the more info the better. Perhaps you could arrange it all chronologically. My interest is in not only identifying players, but providing a record for any family descendants of the team players. As you say, the photographs are in good shape, and should be shared through the wonders of modern technology. Replies to Nigel Innes e...@muskoka.com and please copy ORAFs. Kind Regards |
