Feedback on UMSI/Discover from a classmate in 582:

"The UMSI Discover website that you guys built is a thing of beauty and has some cool interactions. I especially like how your group implemented the 'Discovery' feature by allowing users to select what interests them from a simple list, rather than through drop-downs or some other form element. Another small feature I appreciate is the subtle color coating of the 'Browse' and 'Discover' sections."

We should maybe get together before Ray abandons us at Christmastime (aka graduates) and decide if this project lives or dies?

Yes!! For 601 data manipulation, my personal class project is to create a (basic) visualization of sorts (aka bar graph or the like, nothing fancy are artsy like a real info viz tool). For starters, it might be as simple as displaying the historic class breakdown by specialization from the starting enrollment to the ending enrollment (when I asked a few students what would be helpful, this was it). So for sure I'm still thinking this is a live project. Let me know if/when you guys want to meet and how we should proceed. The biggest obstacle I can see right now from going live is filling in the database and creating a taxonomy of the jobs / skills.

Hey friends,

quick note -- i sit on a few different committees at UMSI. one of them is the MSI committee which helps to determine the overall direction of the school. a new one i am sitting on now is the curriculum goals subcommittee.

anyhow, the curriculum goals subcommittee is looking at devising new ways of guiding students through the umsi curriculum and Laura Elgas who also sits on the committee was wondering if it'd be cool for me to take a few minutes during the MSI committee meeting to showcase our project to get other faculty members and admin members brainstorming new ways of guiding students through the curriculum.

Thoughts? I don't think it's the worst idea. And it gets a bunch of faculty members thinking about how badass we are.

sounds fantastic, let us know if you need any help or prototyping functionalities that we described that are not yet part of the presentation (in particular, any visuals that can assist with the presentation)

and the 'walk-thru' that we used last year is still in the google drive

this might also be a great time to describe that the data is still incomplete and setting up a strategy to collect and populate our database (i.e. asking professors to describe the skills taught in that course and linking those skills to what careers it prepares them for, hiring a work-study student to do data-entry)

Two hours is more than I can do before the end of this semester, but I can certainly devote an hour to: a) assessing where the project stands, b) figuring out next steps, and c) giving everyone the opportunity to decide, based on a & b, if individuals want to forge ahead.

Does that sound like too much for one hour?
