Rachel Niemer recommended your team's Learning Analytics Fellows project to me. I have an opening for someone to present a "half-SLAM" (i.e., a 20-25-minute presentation) on Feb. 21.  Rachel thought your course recommendeder/career advice project was great and that others would benefit from hearing about it.

Might your team be interested in presenting on the 21st?  Can you let me know by the end of the week if this does -- or does not -- work for you? 

We'll also have another date, April 11, for past and present fellows to share their projects, but the max presentation time there will be 5 minutes, so the 21st would definitely give you more time to talk about what you did and what you learned.

Well, if the point of the Feb talk is to talk about what we did and what we learned; I don't know if our 'lessons learned' are that relevant to the analytics focus of learning analytics.. what would those lessons learned be: dealing with inconsistent data, the importance of anonymizing data, the importance of the org having a data strategy and workers on this end, and that the nice polished design makes people more inclined to like it ? all but the last of these seem more managerial than analytical; unless I'm missing something or maybe those all could be good for SLAM to hear.  

Or am I conflating learning analytics for tools that have to be statistical / algorithmic in nature as opposed to having design and the connecting of context-specific content be the engine of change?

Per Kimberly's email; I'm def guilty of putting stuff out there hoping someone would bite, but to vindicate this action, I also generally include myself in that bite.  In that vein, I'm down to give the SLAM presentation and use this to lead into our expo poster (especially if its a prezi presentation; that can almost directly be exported into a poster); (catch) if at least one other person wants to do it with me; then lets send Mary a yes.  

Though, the one thing that keeps burning me is finding a time and date.. so whoever wants to do this with me; please use the 'find a time' in google calendar to find a time that works for us and send me the invite... no hours are off-limits.

I heard the SLAM group is smaller this year and that three teams are SI students; so we can even use this as a good place for feedback from peeps who (assumily) do understand design. And it might be a nice way to introduce design into the otherwise analytics-heavy focus   :)

Edgar, were you under the impression that the SLAM presentation was a poster? Maybe I missed that bit. I think it could be a poster, but a keynote/powerpoint might be easier.

If you want to do the longer presentation, I'm down to help. Are we doing the thing on the 11? I say we do one or the other. I vote the 21 because the 11 is coming up really quick.

In terms of lessons learned, I think we can frame it as "analytics do not tell the whole story" — which I think people might benefit to hear. We can frame our approach as a user centered one, which is what we did. We did use analytics to an extent, but like you said, as a means of support for our site rather than the driver. In other words, we took a top down approach (started with users, ended with using analytics) rather than a bottom up (starting with analytics and trying to do things with it)

I don't know if what I just said made any sense...

Totally clear and that's a very good hook: an inductive rather than deductive approach to the data. What do users need from the data, rather than what does the data tell us about users (that it might someday in a world that looks like The Matrix) tell us about future users---sorry, editorializing)?

oohh.. I'm so happy I'm surrounded by you all :)  Kim, I swear I've heard inductive and deductive for so long but your words finally made it click!

Ying,  I was thinking we can tackle two birds with one stone.. since a prezi presentation zoomed out is essentially a poster, that if we structure our presentation around the items that we would include in a poster, then we have our presentation and our content for our poster.. there may be some differences, but this work would cover a majority of the info that we need for exposition.  Also, the 20 min presentation woud be for Feb 21 and the 5 minute thing would be on April 11, though we may not need to present at that since it would be the same audience as 2/21.   But yeah, let's take our convo offline to find a time to meet to work on the poster but first I will send the email to Mary Wright tomorrow (Sunday) to give you some time to work it into your calendar.
