To add on top of everything, how do people feel about presenting UMSI discover at the exposition? There's a cash prize involved....

expoSItion 2014

Monday, March 24

12 noon-2:00 p.m.

Michigan League, Ballroom

WHAT is the expoSItion? An annual UMSI event where students exhibit projects to potential employers, peers, prospective students, faculty and UM community.

WHO participates?  UMSI Students

WHY participate?

  • Showcase UMSI's talent to the public!
  • Network with potential employers for internship or job opportunities! The UMSI Networking Fair takes place just before the expo.  MOST of those employers also attend the exposition.
  • Help recruit prospective students to the program by showing them all the cool stuff we do here!
  • Hone your presentation skills-valuable practice for upcoming conferences or for your job search!
  • Win some BIG money! (Monetary awards for the best project presentations)
  • If all that isn't enough...free food!

WHAT kind of project can you exhibit?

  • Individual or group projects.
  • Any UMSI Course Project (and not just HCI courses!). Past projects have come from:  622, 601, 618, 572, 623, 501, 644, 647, 508, 649, 580, 581, 655, 692, any iPol course and more!
  • Internships. If you participated in a summer internship (SI 681), create a poster detailing your experience or a project you worked on.
  • Independent research projects.
  • Conference Posters. Planning on presenting a poster at an upcoming conference? If so, definitely consider exhibiting the same poster at the expo!
  • Projects do not have to be complete to exhibit them.  Work-in progress is just fine and actually presents nicely at the expo!  You can present on what you have done so far and what you plan to do.

Expo Project Award Eligibility: All expo projects must...

  • Be initiated and carried out primarily by UMSI and MHI students
  • Be presented at the UMSI expoSItion, March 24, 12:00-2:00 pm
  • Be related to the UMSI curriculum

By popular vote, awards are made to top projects in these categories and criteria (most attractive display; best presentation; most innovative topic; most applicable to the real world):

  • Technology/Design ($1,000 grand prize; $200 honorable mention)
  • Academic/Research ($1,000 grand prize; $200 honorable mention)
  • Community/Service ($1,000 grand prize; $200 honorable mention)
  • Overall Best Project Presentation ($1,000 grand prize; $200 honorable mention)

Project awards are sponsored by Boeing and Yahoo!

The Career Development Office will offer free poster printing to the first five projects submitted to umsi.ex...@umich.edu by March 12. Posters must be a final draft and in PDF format.

Need some inspiration?  Take a look at last year's winners to get some ideas and to get inspired to register your project soon.

Space is limited (first-registered, first served!)

Register by March 16 to be included in the expoSItion printed program and have your resume included in a Resume Collection that will be provided to all employers.

Please email the expo committee if you have any questions.

Happy expo-ing!

I was thinking the exact same thing; I think we should do it for expoSItion!!  all it requires is a poster and it seems having a poster ready can make a SLAM presentation easier as well (well, for the 5 minute presentation in April. I'm still unsure about the upcoming one in Feb)

I'm down for expoSItion. I will nevermore have anything to do with SLAM.

John S. seems, from our Fb conversation, open to being roped into giving UMSI-Discover lasting SI life. I can take ownership of discussing this with him (unless someone else is desperate to).

Who wants to take the lead on expoSItion and, if others are interested, on SLAM?

Sorry to be so direct...working with SI professor project managing has brought out the task-tyrant in me. They love to just put shit "out there" for "someone" to do.

Best,
Kimberly

I'm also unsure about the Feb -- I mean, I guess it's nice that they think our project is valuable...but I don't really want to put in the work. I will go along with the crowd on this one. Whatever you guys decide, I'm for it.

@Kimberly -- yea go ahead and talk with John! No worries on the task tyrant. People need to get shit done.

About ExpoSItion -- I can take lead on the poster. Though, I've never made one before for these purposes. Is there some sort of template we need to follow? Or is it just do whatever we want? Are there size requirements? Does anyone know?

Maura, any thoughts?

I did one last year. I'll find the design if you guys promise not to laugh.

Totes down for ExpoSItion. The upcoming one in Feb I'm less enthusiastic about. That'll come up quick.

Hey Ray,

Just a gentle nudge -- were you able to dig up the poster you put together for last year's expoSItion?

Thanks!
