Mr Farmer would be the most aware of these details, but as he is at
conference, I will attempt to fill in.
How it works in a nutshell is that you get a connection from uswest to your
ISP of choice, where you get an IP and perhaps other services. From there
you are able to connect to anything on the internet including the
University. If you use applications that require an University IP address
there are no easy ways to do this at this time. We are working on some
solutions but do not expect that we will have a solution that runs at
scale any time soon.
At this time we are not planning on becoming a megacentral, the USWEST term
for the ISP part of this setup.
The ADSL service that USWEST is using is very dependent on distance so it
is not available for many people. (and they are using pre standards
equipment, so it is very likely that the free modem device will have to be
replaced when the standards arrive.)
