CLASS COUNCIL AGENDA 10/2/08
1. Graduation date change.
-Graduation had to be changed because of a conflict with the booking of Northrop.  I talked with Linda, and we agreed that May 2nd would be the next best choice.  She has Northrop reserved that day from 2-5.  She also is planning to reschedule with our speaker.Thoughts?
2. Graduation Committee.
-Met with Dean Watson and Linda in September.  Basically, the agenda for the ceremony is basically set, and we also talked about a program cover design.  There are three greeters the class willl vote on, 2 will be from TC, 1 from Duluth.  Also, we will be voting on an oath-it is possible we may create our own oath at Match Day Retreat.  Med school is paying for flowers, food after the reception, and a bagpiper.  We have been talking about hiring the violinist from White Coat Ceremony to play for us (fee is $200).  Other thoughts included inviting students to have the opportunity to showcase their musical/artistic/other talents at the ceremony.  We will ask for submissions and will add performers into the ceremony as we can.  The other issue is the "special" speaker. Last year, for the first time, the class of 2008 invited Dr. Mackenzie to speak at their graduation because they felt it would nice to have the first person who spoke to them "conclude" their medical school careers.  When I polled the class, many people said they would like to hear Mackenzie, many said Katz, and there were others included on this list. However, I also received numerous emails from Duluth students requesting a speech from Dr. Patrick Ward.  Needless to say, we are having difficulties deciding what to do in this situation... Please feel free to share your thoughts, but know that we are working on this.
-Graduation party discussion has been deferred to a later date.
3. Match Day Committee.
-Fairview, Allina, Park Nicollett, Air Force, and HealthPartners have all given money for the events. Event at McNamara includes breakfast and address by Dean Powell, then lunch at Sally's. There will be a party at Solera that night with either a band or a DJ.  Also need to decide on paper vs. email invitations or both.
4. Yearbook Committee.
-Shirlee and Kate Graham have been doing a great job connecting with Linda and the Josten's rep.  Kate sent an email to the class requesting pictures of events. She also has been working on getting a historically accurate image of the caduceus on the cover of the yearbook (has been untraditional in the past).
5. Next month's gathering.
-Why dont we try to put a little more brainpower into this one.  What's something we could stand to know a little more about before residency?  I had an idea to bring in physicians to talk to us about how we get paid when we finally are in practice, but I had been leaning more towards doing on Transition to Residency Day. Any other ideas?

We had a pretty short class meeting last week, as only Dan, Eric and I were
there. We discussed:
1) Whether or not to send actual paper invitations to all students for
Match Day. We are still undecided on this--on the one hand, it might be
nice to do both email and paper invitations, but on the other hand, we
weren't sure if the expense would be warranted. This needs more discussion,
hopefully among the entire class council (or we need for someone, maybe our
class president, to make an executive decision ;) ).
-also, is Match Day a "med students only" event, or are
families/significant others typically present as well?
2) The question came up of whether paper invitations for the graduation
ceremony will be sent to families. Eric agreed to talk to members of the
graduation planning committee to find out.
3) It sounds like Match Day is pretty much all planned out--speakers, food,
location, etc--great job Amy!

Eric and Dan, please feel free to add in if I forgot to mention something.
Thanks.
