Hey Steph,
This was just sent out to all the deans on the AAMC listserve, I think it has a good portion about her history if someone can perhaps write a bit more about what she meant to students I think that would be great. Let me know if you have trouble finding someone to write as I knew her fairly well through discussions we had about OSR and at the AAMC meetings, however I feel someone who had a more personal interaction with her would probably be best. Thanks.

Dear colleagues,
Helene Horwitz, associate dean for student affairs, passed away Friday, Oct.
24, following treatment for a brain tumor. She will be greatly missed by all of
us in the University of Minnesota Medical School and throughout the University
who worked closely with her. Above all, our medical students and the many
graduates whom she encouraged feel the loss of their champion Helene.
Well-educated and fiercely intelligent, Helene devoted her career to aiding
medical students, first at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, then at
the Minnesota Medical Foundation and, from 1989 on, at our Medical School. She
advised the Medical School Student Council and the leaders of the Student
National Medical Association. Helene was involved with our chapter of the Alpha
Omega Alpha medical honor society as well as the more recently established
chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society. She also helped those students at
risk, in collaboration with other members of the Committee on Student
Scholastic Standing. Among our current medical students, those who have taken
advantage of the Flexible M.D. are grateful to her for her guidance.
It was noted in her Minneapolis Star Tribune obituary that Helene felt
lucky to have such a rewarding job; we, too, are fortunate that she served the
Medical School and our students with such dedication. In her honor, the Helene
and Charles Horwitz Scholarship Fund for Altruistic Medical Students has been
set up at the Minnesota Medical Foundation.
Helene is survived by her husband, Charles; children Karyn, Martin (Stacy), and
Michael; and four grandchildren, Kelli, Adam, Xavier, and Quinn.
