1. 联谊会 (FACSS) 介绍
欢迎你来到明尼苏达大学 (简称"明大")，欢迎你加入我们的行列--明尼苏达大学中国学生学者联谊会 (Friendship
Association of Chinese Students & Scholars, 简称 FACSS)。 FACSS成立于1984年，是目
前全美最大的中国学生学者组织之一。联谊会面向明大的中国学生学者社群，所有来到明大学习、工作、访问的学生学者都可注册成为本会的成员。我们的宗旨是
增进中美友谊和文化交流，促进两国人民的了解，服务中国社区。
我们的工作包括：
迎接新到达的中国学生学者，帮助他们了解明大和双城。
定期发布和交流社区信息，包括住房，工作等的信息。
组办每年一度的中秋联谊活动和春节庆祝活动。
举办学术文化交流活动，组织各种体育比赛和文艺表演，以及与大家在明大学习生活息息相关的各种联谊服务。
联谊会由执行委员会(Executive Committee)负责日常运作。执行委员会由公开选举产生， 每年改选一次。所有执行委员会成员工作都是

2 学校介绍
2．1．前言
欢迎大家长途跋涉来到明尼苏达大学！本手册是明尼苏达大学中国学生学者联谊会 (Friendship Association of
Chinese Students & Scholars，简称FACSS)为服务新到来的中国学生学者而编写的。手册的原则是：从主要的急需面入手，
而非面面俱到；推荐经验之谈与选择性的观点，而非判断性的结论。
从大家的实际需要出发，我们从2000年暑期开始发布本手册。2004年的手册在2003年手册的基础上更新。我们衷心希望这一系列工作能帮助大家较快
办妥各种手续, 顺利进入积极紧张的学习、研究状态。
2．2．学校简介
明尼苏达大学已成立152周年，是世界级的综合性研究性大学，曾经有7位诺贝尔奖得主在明大工作学习过。作为一所规模宏大的公立学校，其学生之多和校园
之大都是全美数一数二的。其中国学生学者数量位居全美之首，2003年有近1400人。据最近资料，明大有218个硕士学位课程和114个博士学位课
程。明大在中国的姐妹学校是天津南开大学，不过近年来开始发展与其它省市院校的联系。学校设有中国中心(China Center)，负责有关的联络和
沟通工作，其网是http://www.chinacenter.umn.edu。有关学校详情可查网页。
2．3．校园分布
明大现共有四个分校：TwinCities，Duluth，Crookston和Morris。明尼阿波利斯市 (Minneapolis;
Mpls) 和圣保罗市 (Saint Paul; St. Paul) 合称双城 (Twin Cities)。严格说来，虽然双城分校只是明大主
干，但传统上代表全校，所以我校全称是 University of Minnesota-Twin Cities。双城校区由西向东分 成三大区域：
西岸 (West Bank)，东岸 (East Bank)，圣保罗 (Saint Paul)；西岸和东岸隔密西西比河相望， 由华盛顿街大桥
(Washington Ave. Bridge) 跨大河将两岸连接，共称为明尼阿波利斯 (Minneapolis, Mpls)校区，明尼阿波利
斯校区和圣保罗校区之间由校车 ("Campus Connector") 连接。东、西岸之间有校车 (Washington Bridge
Circulator)， 每 7~15 分钟一班；东岸有 East Bank Circulator， 每 10分钟一班，经过主要教学建筑。 请
注意上述免费校车名称和发车时刻表（站牌上注有），对大部分新生它将是今后一段时间的主要交通线路。不过需注意假期车次时间稍有不同，部分线路停开。
西岸校区离明尼阿波利斯市区最近，有社会科学各系(政治、历史、经济等)、商学院、法学院、音乐学院、艺术、戏剧系等和财务大楼 (Payroll
Office，West Bank Office Building)、国际学生学者办公室(ISSS)，东岸有各行政机关如校长楼、研究生院
(Graduate School)、医药学院、技术学院、人文学院 (College of Liberal Arts，CLA)各系。圣保罗校区离
圣保罗市区有一段距离，有农学院、生物、林业等系。
关于学校布局，校内各图书馆都有校地图，请索取。
3 入学手续注册事项
1． 学生证办公室 U- card Office 是第一站，设在825 Washington Avenue SE, Room 107办公。在东
岸的University Recreation Center 和圣保罗校区的St. Paul Gym设有办公点。可当场拍摄证件照。学生证
(U-card) 是今后借阅图书和出入 电脑房、运动馆及使用其它设施的必需证件，它还有"银行卡"(TCF银行)和Gopher卡 的功能。校园内
设有cash-to-card机(与银行帐户无关且不能退现)， 卡上存入少量金额后就可在学校内的各自动售货机，复印机，打印机 上使用(具体使用方
法可参阅学生证说明)。
2． 第二站是国际学生学者办公室(ISSS: International Students & Scholars Service) ，在西岸
Humphrey Center (简称 HHH) 底层190。办公时间： 周一到周四：8:00-12:00, 1:00-4:00， 周五
10:30-12:00, 1:00-4:00. 要带上I-20 (make sure you bring pg. 4) or IAP-66,
passport, visa, I-94 card, previous I-20/IAP-66(if applicable),
admission letter, and sponsor letter （if applicable）。
一般情况下，国际学生为获得更多信息，可订阅国际学生学者办公室每周一次的电子刊物。刊物包括与国际学生息息相关的签证，工作及其它活动信息。具体订阅
办法为：以LIST...@tc.umn.edu为收件地址，发一封电子邮件。邮件的标题栏不要填写任何内容，在正文部分只写
SUBSCRIBE INTL-L 你的名 你的姓
不要附加任何签名及签名文件。如果在订阅中遇到问题，还可以打电话(612)626-7100或者发电子邮件给is...@tc.umn.edu。国际学

3． 第三站是到校财会中心 (Payroll) 去办理财务手续，包括 RA 和 TA 合同确认 及收取工资的具体细节。该楼在西岸办公大楼
(West Bank OfficeBuilding[WBOB]) 中。初来不易找，经西岸法学院西边过 19 街，往右 (西北)拐入华盛顿大街
(注意是 朝棕色的HolidayInn方向再往前)，路北过公路桥就能望见深色宽型镶有线、标有明大红字的大楼便是。步行并不费时，但要注意交通安
全。
4．第四站是申请社会安全号。社会安全号 (SSN: Social Security Number) 是确认你在美国的合法身份的关键数字，相当于
国内身份证，不要轻易示人。为方便学生，学校在报到时增设了一些简化办理过程的服务。通常，社会安全号可以与财务手续同时办理。具体办理方法可参阅在国
际学生学者办公室领取的指南。
5． 第五站是校保健站 (Boynton Clinic)。它在东岸410 Church Street SE，
Minneapolis,MN.55455。网址是。请携带出国体检时获得的免疫证明及其它体质证明材料办理。
有关学校其它有关机构和服务，请留意在 720 Washington Ave SE, ISSS(国际学生 学者办公室)的新生课程,Moos
Tower底层邮局领取地图、车次表、环境介绍等。
4 生活信息
4．1． 钱款
办理以上各项事务的同时，应办理开银行帐户等事宜。办理过程中，要耐心仔细，带好护照和各种证明。
4．1．1 银行
存钱即开户，所以也和信用卡，支票等相关。如已选定理想的银行，可以一起办理。开银行账号。携带护照，I-20，I-94 (最好和护照订在一起) 到
银行开个checking account（没有利息），可以是暂时的。以后可选较长期银行，开设 savings account （有利息）。开户
一般要存一笔最低存款。 校园附近有 TCF 和Wells Fargo等 银行机构。TCF是最常见的，在校园内有多处ATM取款机，但请注意并非总
是能免费。TA、RA 可办理工资直接过户 （direct deposit），由 Payroll 把钱直接划过去， 便利不少。 如在 2520
University Ave 有 Affinity Plus 是专对教职工和研究生 开放的信用社（相当于银行）。其网上服务地址是：
http://www.affinityplus.org/ 。
4.1.2 开户后会得到一个debit卡或checking卡，可用来在大多数美国店付账。注意这跟预支信用卡 credit card 不完全一
样。
4.1.3. 怎样开支票。(见附录 3)
如果付 $31.03，写 "Thirty One and 3/100 Dollars Only"；
如果付 $1256.03，则写 "Twelve Hundred Fifty Six and 3/100 Dollars Only"；如果是
$16.00，就写 "Sixteen and 0/100 Dollars"。
4.1.4. 带多少零钱？
钱最好存在银行不要留太多现金在身边，一般留几十块钱就足够了。带一定数额的 $1 纸币及硬币对坐车、复印方便。
4．2 健康与安全
4. 2. 1．如何保护自己和找到援助。
初来乍到万一生病怎么办：新生在九月份开学之前可能还不能享受学校的医疗保险，因此最好自备若干常用药以备万一急用。但如果是急病，需住院或急诊，应立
刻拨打 911 紧 急电话；作为没有收入的学生，病人可申请医疗费豁免。
4. 2. 2．街上遇到讨钱人怎么办？
你可能常会碰见一两个人向你问路然后讨一元车钱，或称自己有紧急事故请求帮忙给零钱，再者直接讨钱。通常他们会客客气气。常见的办法是客气、明确而简短
地说没有。如果高兴，可以给一个25分币。你有权坚持不给，而他们一般也习以为常，仍然客客气气。
4. 2. 3．应急。
除应急电话911外，校区警察署的日常电话是(612)6243550。校园内还有多处紧急电话(Campus Emergency
Telephone)，一按就能呼救，其分布点在校地图上都有标志。
学校另有良好的24小时护送服务。如因事在办公室忙到天黑，不便独行，在校内任何一个系或楼都可拨打(612)624walk(6249255)，告诉
你所在位置，他们会立刻派出人来与你接头，护送你到车站或安全地带。
4. 2. 4.法律事务。
学校提供免费法律咨询服务，可请教各种有关的疑难问题，尤其是与租房有关的 (如房东不公道) 和付帐纠葛等。咨讯处在西岸跨华盛顿街的天桥上。详情
是：
"University Student Legal Service,
160 West Bank Skyway，219 19th Avenue South.
8:30 am- 5 pm, Monday to Friday。"
4．3. 住房
房间类型。
分成apartment(一般带有卫生间和厨房)和house（一般与别人共用卫生间和厨房）。
一居室 (one bedroom apartment), 房租在$500─$750之间，一室一厅，可与室友 (roommate) 分租。
两居室 (two bedroom apartment)，二室一厅，房租在$700─$1200之间， 有的三个人也能住，但卫生、厨房仍是三人共
享，需互相协调。另有多居室，如三居室等等。
Studio，房租在$450─$600之间，起居、卫生都在一单元里，只够一个人住， 有的便宜而没有厨房。有时称 efficiency。
house 里的单居室，房租在 $250-$350间可能与5个邻居以上共一个卫生间 (bath room)和厨房 (kitchen)，有的会有
一个厅 (living room)，几家或全楼公用。
4.3.2.找房主要途径。
FACSS (中国学生学者联谊会) 的信息交流 (email list 和联谊会主页BBS生活空间区 上)寻找房源同时发征房启示。
学校housing office 及其网站：在 Comstock Hall；现在已有网上服务， 很方便，请查学校网页中的 housing 一
项。
通过校园内的广告信息。如在圣保罗校区可去学生中心 (Student Center，在校 车发车站)查看。在校园内也能看到各种招贴，一般都是学生
所贴，要注意贴出的时间及条件，因为不是通过媒体，有时格式不规范、内容不完整。
例："Looking for Roomate：
An international grad student looking for m/f roomate in a 2 bdr apt,
$400 including everything。"
这里是一位外国研究生住在一个二室一厅的套间，在找室友，男女生不论，但没有讲明自己性别，也没讲明 $400 是两人 合付一套还是每人各付自己的一
间。
查当地报纸。来到明大后，能否较早找到理想的住房，一定程度上取决于能否得到最多信息，一个主要来源就是地方报纸广告版，最常用的是：
Star Tribune （www.startribune.com），
Pioneer (www.pioneerplanet.com)，
Minnesota Daily（www.minnesotadaily.com）。
特别是 Minnesota Daily，是明大的校报，可以在校园各处免费得到。
广告实例：
"2XX Oak St SE, rm $320/mo+elec, laund, shr bath, kitch. 5 blks to the
U. Avail 8/15, Tom, (612) XXX-XXXX. 10-4。"是指该街200~299号之间某一处单间，月租不包括电费，有
洗衣设备，厨房、浴室共用。过五条街就到学校。你需要看清到学校的哪一块。去电话联系应在上午10点到下午4点之间。因有限于版面，住房条件常用缩
写。
或者可以查www.citipages.com。
另外，有些相关机构也发布住房信息，如明大国际学生协会 (MISA)。

选房注意事项
地址，签约，条件，价格贵贱，宜听取老生的经验之谈，因为选房是非常个人性的选择，很难有统一标准。但以一般中国同学的经验而论，基本上第一年以近学
校、价格适中、环境设施好为准。每月房租应以不超过月收入的三分之一为适中。
近学校：先选校区，若在本系校区外，应考虑是否有校车和公交车可达。
例如：你是EE的学生，一般宜住东岸，但如果在圣保罗找到合适的房子，只要靠近校车车站，也不妨考虑。还有在市区在3、16、7、21路沿线，如果其它
条件合适，也可以考虑。住校园附近的好处是便于RA和TA工作，没有赶公车的麻烦。又能参与学校的各种活动，包括去运动房锻炼，时间上较机动。东岸可
找 Dinkytown， Stadium Village，Como 地区(略远)，西岸可找 Seven Corners，Cedar 和
Franklin 等街区。
住房合同分定期 (六个月，九个月，一年) 和不定期 (month to month) 两
种。签署定期合同要谨慎，要细看条款。同时，不定期的房子也许条件较差。
sublease指在一定限期内可住，从一个月到一年不等，如果条件都好，当然可选。最后要看押金条件如何，一般应不高于一个月的房租，且住满后可取
回。[参 4.2.5]房内卫生自己负责，期满以后恢复原状。否则会被扣订金。
讲到条件，不外看暖气、空调、电话接线、厨房、浴室等是否齐全，是否要另外支付，是否与别人合用。很多房租不包括上述费用及水电气，这些都可在广告上标
明。有的住房没有洗衣设备，冬天会很不方便，且街上公共洗衣房一般略贵于楼房内所设。有没有电话接线也很重要。
应急。
刚来找不到房怎么办？可住学校宿舍楼，价格约 $18~20 一天，这些地方安全有保
证，卫生条件也很好，对数天以至一二周临时住宿是不错的。可到 Centennial Hall 问询, 其地址是614 Delaware
Street SE，Minneapolis, MN 55455-1188，电话
Business Office: (612) 625-4655，Information Desk: (612) 625-4452。
搬家。
最好等电和电话都通了再搬进去，要检查一下各种家具和设备，如果有坏的一定要向manager或caretaker指出。[参4.2.5]长话业务用电
话卡便宜，可在网上找到卖电话卡的站点，不妨找有信用卡的老生咨询。也可在一些中国杂货店买到。

4.4.交通
4.4.1.怎样利用公交车
从明大校区及周围到市区可坐公交车来往，上车每人一律$1.25，上下班高峰$1.75，投币后你会拿到一张换车卡(transfer)，凭此卡你可在
两个半小时内免费坐各号车。如有"学期通票"(UPass)，则不必有换车卡，而能随时享受该便利。可以在 Parking and
Transportation office， 511 Washington Ave SE或其网址
www1.umn.edu/parking。 U-Pass一学期有效, 面值$50. 乘车不多的同学可以买 Saver card, 面值$10
至 $20, 可以有10%的优惠, 且无期限, 至票值用完为止. 可在Parking and Transportation office,
Saint Paul Student Center，Moos Tower购买.
哪里取车次时间表？Saint Paul Student Center，Moos Tower 底层邮局门口， 公共图书馆，等。
2，6，16，7 路路线介绍。
o o 2 路 Z 字型行驶，经过 Dinkytown，Washington Ave，到 Loring Park 雕塑公园；
o o 6 路北起Washington 街和Oak Street 的交界处，从 Dinkytown 经 Hennepin 桥、市区直达美丽的湖
区；
o o 16 路横贯 St Paul 和 Minneapolis 两市区Downtown，途径 Midway Shopping Center
和学校。如从东岸华盛顿街坐 16 路往东到 Snelling Ave 的 Midway 购物中心购物；
o o 7 路经西岸商学院到机场和 Mall of America。
怎样辨认车站：参见公车时课表样本。此地与国内不同，具体站次要到候车玻璃亭内看。一般只列主要站名，如 16 路往东线列 Oak Street 而
不列 Coffman Union，要学会从两站之间推算。
怎样上车投币：在车进站时应备好一美元纸币或硬币。上车投入司机右边的票机，会拿到一张换车卡 (transfer)。
怎样要求下车：在快到站前拉车窗近旁的"缆绳"或按触键。在司机头上方信号牌上便会显示红底黄字 "Stop Requested"。注意：有些司机不
报站名。
购买"学期通票"(U-Pass)：$50 一张，可在整个双城地区公交车上使用，
一学期有效。购买地点在交通办公室 (Transportation & Safety Building, 511 Washington Ave
SE) 三楼。
不要急于买车，理由是冬天将近，且第一学期未必便于学车;可以先准备笔试，要在通过笔试后三个月才能考路试。
4.4.2. 在市区各条线路的公交车车次，可以通过网络向公交中心查询，其网址是 .；另外你任何时候都可以打电话询问车
次，612-373-3333。
4.5. 通讯
电话
如果找定了住处，便可申请电话。注意区分本地接通线路（Local Call）的公司 (通常是 Qwest，1-877-660-6342) 和外地
长途(Long Distance)两部分服务。
4.5.2. 没有长途电话服务，可用电话卡，几种常用的卡可在中国店购买，价格300分钟$18到400分钟$20不等。有些同学可在网上登记到价廉
的电话卡。注意问请是否有"接通费"和时段。
E-mail
到校后应立刻办理学校的电子信帐户；地点在东岸的 Shephard-Hall，或西岸的 50 Humphrey Center。
4.5.4. 怎么上网？可在公共图书馆及公共机房上机。
4.5.5. 邮局分布：学校附近有两处，分别在 Dinkytown 的 4th Street 近 13th Ave， 和University
Ave 近北京园。寄国际平信 $0.8 起；美国境内 $0.37 起。 此外校园内
还有Saint Paul Student Center，Moos Tower 底层邮局, 还有多处邮筒可投信。
4.6. 购物
4.6.1.环境。
从一般需求讲，购物可以按以下专业商店分类。请熟悉这些店名。日用杂物、生活用品在 Target，Walgreen，K Mart；食品在
Cubfood, Rainbow, SuperValue；
东方食品在上海店Shanghai Market，龙星Dragon Star, 联合United Noodles；
电器在 Best Buy，Circuit City；文具在 Office Max；服饰在 Dayton's，
California Mervin，JC Penny，TJ Max 和 Marshall；等等。
如考虑步行，东岸校区的学生可到 Stadium Village 的 Harvard Market (Washington Ave),
Dinkytown 的 House of Hanson (14th Ave 上) 小店买到食品，
University Ave 上的 Office Max 找文具。
学校的教材，在 Dinkytown 的 Student Book Store，东岸的 Williams Hall 地下书店和西岸的
SmithBookstore寻找。网上购书值得推荐，如在, , 和 等。
电脑可在 Best Buy，Circuit City 和 Computer USA 物色。不过,在找定房
子后再考虑也不迟，可参考网上销售的优惠价。
买二手家具、床架、自行车，最好去 Goodwill, 在 Como Ave 与 280 highway 交界
处。骑自行车从学校出发约 12~16 分钟可达。另外，附近有明大处理品商店 (实际上像工厂) 可买到很便宜的折旧桌椅 (Recycling
Center of UMN, 在 Como Ave上)，但得有朋友驾车带，否则不易来去。
4.6.2. 除朋友帮助外，新生可尝试自立更生，自己坐公交车去各商业中心购物。
从西、东岸校区北端、圣保罗校区往北到 Roseville Mall (内有Dayton's, California Mervin 等) 和略小
的 Harmar Mall，找家具，厨具，生活用品；
从西、东岸校区南端坐 16 路，或从圣保罗校区中间坐 4 路，到 Midway (有
Target, K Mart, Cubfood, Rainbow)，找食品和日杂用品。
从西岸、东岸校区华盛顿街坐 16、50 路，或从圣保罗校区中间坐 16 路，到明市市区 downtown。
从西岸南端坐 7 路，或从圣保罗校区中间坐 4 路，往南到 Mall of America。该处主要为服饰文具等。
4.6.3. 价格。
请辨清 regular, sale, retail price 等不同。15% off 指原价去掉15%，即应付原价的 85%。在食品店要注
意 "free" 的条件，通常是小字容易忽视。
如何付款。
如果用现钞支付没任何问题，如用信用卡或支票，可能因初来收款员会要求你出示带照片身份证件。你可以解释自己刚到，不及办理。可以告诉家中电话和，以便
其查对。与收款员有任何僵持情况，可要求找其经理，往往可得到解决。
退货。
购物如不满意，多半能退。但勿借此贪小便宜。切记许多店家开始用电脑作业系统，累计退货情况，一定情况下可以影响你的信用记录。
4.7. 暑假
来得早的同学怎么度过？除了找房子，注册，恢复时差，写信，发 email 等， 还应注意调剂生活，为开学作好准备。

享受夏季。漫长的六个月的冬季将来大家会回忆，夏季是明州最好的时节，有许多户外活动，文艺节目可以观赏。特别是在历史性的 St Anthony

Main Street，Nicollet Island 一带，从 6 月 4 日到 9月 4 日，每晚 7 点在岛上有群众音乐表演。7 月
14~23 日 为第 61 届每年一度的河滨文化节 。7 月 15 日大游行，19 日火炬游行，22 日烟火会。如果有驾车的朋友带，稍晚每年一

逛市区。建议到圣保罗市区看看州政府机构 (Capitol Square)，著名的大教
堂和戏剧中心等；到明市市区看看 Nicollet Mall 购物一条街及有在美国首
创的空中楼道 (skyway)，Barnes & Nobel 书店，Uptown 文化街等。Mall of America 也可以逛。在市区要
注意安全。著名的明市艺术博物馆 (Minneapolis Institute of Art) 有优秀的东、西方珍品，在校区近旁，在
Dinkytown 的旧书店 The Book House (429 14th Ave SE)，唱片店 Cheapo，贺卡店 Campus
Card 等都可留连。
图书馆。见识一下排名北美第 17 (不限于学校系统) 的明大图书馆的 550万
册书，48000种刊物。别忘了校内有40个不同专业的图书馆，比如你在基本馆 (Wilson Library) 借了电脑书和唐诗后，还可以到建筑
系图书馆借贝聿铭 (I.M. Pei) 的建筑图册。
锻炼。一旦拿到UCard便可去校运动馆。在明尼阿波利斯东岸校区和圣保罗校区各有一个。内有各种健身器材，泳池，室内球场。
4.7.2. 准备学业。
有些同学需上TA所要求的课程，可抓住机会温习，否则开学后很忙，不大容易另找机会。
可查看选课目录，及早定下要选的课，要避免热门课因不及时而无法选上。如已决定所选课程，应去书店找寻教材，早去常可买到折价的二手书。
向学长和同学咨询有关 TA 和 RA 工作的任何准备。
认清下学期上课教室位置，最近路径，午间用餐可能的地方等。要注意同系的课不一定在同一个楼上，两节课间会跑很多路，一开始很容易因寻找而迟到。

sharing from their lives, a short speech, and discussion. Translation
into Mandarin and free child care are available during the program.
This is a great place to get to know people, learn, and have fun! Come

The Hospitality Center for Chinese exists for you ━ our purpose is to

4.9. 饮食
4.9.1. 东方菜。
学校附近的中式饭店有多家，散布在 Washington Ave 上和 Dinkytown，如
桥东楼 VillageWok, 北京园 Peking Garden Restaurant, 双城 Shuang Cheng
Restaurant, 香港面馆 Hong Kong Noodles Restaurant, 和校园餐馆 U Garden Chinese
Restaurant等等。稍远在Main Street 也有。还有在西岸商学院以南，华盛顿街东头，及 Dinkytown 有混和中国和东南亚风
味的饭馆,一般午餐在 $5~7 左右，点菜 $8~15 一道。
4.9.2. 其它口味。
如果习惯吃西式快餐，McDonald's，Pizza Hut，Arby's 等较方便。学校医学院 (Moos Tower)、商学院
(Carlson School) 及较少人知的 Nolte Hall 地下层都有方便的餐厅。
4.9.3. TA、RA 带饭注意：
要考虑微波热菜是否方便。有些食物味重或刺激，在公共场合食用需注意系所内
是否接受。TA、RA 工作辛苦到夜间，可电话订购馅饼 pizza，告知地址，店方可
送货上门，给酌量小费即可。
4.9.4. 在外吃饭，除了快餐、自助餐外，都要给小费，一般以点菜的 15~20% 左右为适中。(其实其它服务如理发、餐厅点歌、修鞋等一般也要
给小费。)
4.10. 个人文件管理
学历、成绩单、护照、签证、I-20、I-94等各种文件都要妥善保存。需要复印文件
的，可在校园各处找到投币复印机，特别是在图书馆。校区附近的有 Kinko's，
Alpha Print 和 Office Max 等都有复印服务。

5. 文化，交际
许多同学都是第一次到完全不同的一种文化中生活，这种新的体验既让人兴奋又会带来极大的冲击。我们要学会在最短的时间找出和适应这种新文化的基本规则。
美国文化与中国文化大相径庭。出国以前我们都对美国文化有一些了解，但要到这种新文化中生存，文化冲突是不可避免的。本章将帮助同学们了解中美文化的基
本冲突点，帮助大家有意识的去关注并克服他们。
中美文化的冲突点
1. 交流方式和目的不同。美国文化中交流(communication)主要是为了完成某事，而中国文化中，交流主要是为了联络感情。所以美国人说话
比中国人直接，并且对事不对人；而中国人更重视言外之意，且容易把不同观点当成对自己的攻击。与美国人打交道时，我们不用考虑太多的言外之意，而且我们
自己也不妨学会直来直去。
例如：Chinese: I'm afraid that our proposal will be turned down.
American: Why do you say that Jane said that she likes our proposal.
Chinese: I have a feeling that she does not really like it. She was
just saying that to be nice.
American: Trust me on this. I know she means it.
Chinese: Are you sure
American 1: Do you like the music
American 2: No. It's too noisy.
American 1: Do you like the music
Chinese: It's a bit noisy. Except for that, all is good.
各个系通常会组织一些社交活动(department social), 专门帮助学生和教授联络感情，因为他们觉得平时的交流没有达到联络感情的目
的。大家到一定时间在一定地点聚集聊天，到了规定时间，大家就分头回家。此举在咱们看来有些不大自然，因为咱们平时的与人说话打交道就已经包含了联络感
情的目的。
美国人非常重视说话能力的培养，因为说话本身便能帮他们办事，他们要解决冲突也是"Let's.talk",中国人可能觉得他们过于assertive
和talkative。在面试的时候，美国人通常夸大他们的经验，而咱们可能过于谦虚谨慎。
例如：Ms. Johns: Well, I can see you have a lot of experience in this
area. You've been doing this for the past 5 years.
Ms. Wang: I have some experience.
Ms. Johns: I understand your position is very important.
Ms. Wang: Essentially, everyone is responsible for a particular area,
so every position is important.
Ms. Johns: Ms. Wang, could you tell me what your contribution would be
if you join us
Ms. Wang: I'll do my best and work hard.
2. 美国人的个体意识和中国人的群体意识。美国人给独立（independence）和自由（freedom）赋予极高的重要性。这种重要性表现在各
个方面。他们从小便被培养得非常独立，每一个人就是一个完全独立的实体。他们往往不会像咱们那样对别人主动提出帮助，因为让别人自己做自己的事显示出对
别人的信心。所以一旦你需要帮助，不要等著他们来问你，而要尽早向他们提出。
美国人的privatearea是与publicarea严格分开的，而咱们没有如此严格的划分。除了向他们询问年龄，薪水，或婚姻状况的禁忌以外，要
避免身体接触（在电梯里或街上不小心碰到谁的身体时要道歉），要尽量提前与他们约定见面时间，进他们的房间（包括办公室）以前要记住敲门，询问他们能否
打断他们的对话，对打断他们的对话表示道歉，等等。美国人使用更多的礼貌用语，而咱们可能不习惯如此频繁出现的谢谢对不起。
例如：美国人在公共场合打喷嚏或打饱嗝后立刻会说 "Excuse me"，而别人打喷嚏后则说"Bless you"以示关心，回答"Thank
you!"以示礼貌。
3. 思考方式不同。美国教育的基本目的不是给学生灌输知识，而是培养学生独立思考，分析，和解决问题的能力，而咱们的教育目的主要是传授前人积累的智
慧。所以咱们需要习惯美国人老问为什么，并且向他们说明你的观点时，要通过举事实，而不是通过重复强调你的观点。当美国人问你问题的时候，不用怀疑他们
在挑战你的权威或学识，他们通常是为了获得信息而发问。当你有不理解的地方或需要信息时，大胆提问吧，美国人期待著你这么做。
以上的对比及例子是对美国文化和中国文化的非常粗略的总结，它们是文化特性而不是每个个体的个性。所以不要期待用这些基本的特性去期待每一个美国人。它
们只是帮助我们破解文化密码的开端，我们需要在实践中保持开放的心态去主动观察和发现美国文化的规律。此外，阅读文化交流方面的文章和参加跨文化交流的
培训都能帮助我们提高在另一种文化中生存的能力。了解和遵从美国文化的规律并不意味著把自己美国化，而是说我们需要用不同的交流方式与不同的人打交
道。

Glossary of Housing Terms
Apartment building -- A building with two or more living units. Each
unit will have one or more rooms, including a kitchen and a bathroom.
Typically there is a common hall-way and parking area.
Caretaker --The person the landlord hires to manage and clean rental
housing.
Contract or lease -- a promise in writing or an oral agree-ment about
renting a place to live.
Deposit -- Money paid to the owner to cover damage the tenant may do
or for failure to pay t11~ rent. If the tenant does no damage and pays
all the rent, the owner must return the money with interest shortly
after the tenant moves out.
Family/partnered housing -- This is sometimes called "married student
housing." These are buildings which are owned by the University and
managed by student coopera-tives. They house students who are married,
have fami-lies, single parents and partnered students.
Landlord (owner) -- The person who owns the place for rent.
Listing -- Information about a specific apartment, room, house or
other unit that is for rent.
Notice of intent to move -- Telling the owner in writing that the
tenant intends to leave rental housing; usually thirty-one (31) days
(30 days plus one day before the rent is due) is the minimum
requirement. However, the require-ments may be longer and should be
checked with the land-lord.
Off-campus housing -- Housing owned by persons or companies in the
metropolitan area that rent places to live.
Rent -- Money paid by the tenant, usually monthly, for use of the
owner's building.
Residence halls ~ These are buildings owned by the University
(sometimes called dormitories or "dorms") to house single students or
students not accompanied by spouse, partner or family.
Rooming house -- A house where the owner rents one or more bedrooms,
with tenants sharing bathroom and often a kitchen.
Sharing/roommate -- Student tenants rent an apartment in a building
and advertise for other tenants to share the costs.
Sublet -- Renting a place to live from a tenant, rather than from an
owner (not allowed in many contract/lease agree-ments). The tenant
wants to leave his/her lease before the lease agreement time is up.
The tenant may then rent the remaining months of the lease to someone
else.
Tenant (renter) -- The person paying the money to live in a place
owned by another person.
Utilities -- Money paid to companies that provide heat (natural gas),
electricity, water and telephones.
Off-Campus Housing
Housing & Residential Life has rental information for off-campus
apartments, houses and rooms. This information (called "listings")
changes daily and cannot be sent by mail, fax or given over the
telephone. You must visit Housing & Residential Life to get the rental
information.
Information about most apartments, houses and rooms come into Housing
& Residential Life three to six weeks before they are available for
rent. The best time to look at the listings is about a month before
you want to move in. There are some listings that allow immediate move-
in if you need housing when you arrive. Telephones are available in
the office for calling local numbers
Housing & Residential Life also has other information including bus
schedules and furniture rental. Campus area maps are also available.

Using the Off-Campus Listing Service
1. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:15
p.m. From July through September the office is open Saturdays from
9:00 to 12:00 a.m. The office is closed on holidays.
2. Tell the receptionist at the information desk that you want to use
the listing service. The receptionist will give you a registration
card and ask that you complete the infor-mation
3. The information about places to live (the "listings") is kept in
notebooks which are color coded to denote the dif-ferent types of
listings. For example, one color will contain information about one
bedroom apartments and another about roommates. You should choose the
color of binder listing the type of unit for which you are looking.
4. Each listing includes the following information:
Cost (rent) per month,
Location (area address).
Furniture (if any is offered).
Deposit (money you pay if you damage the place or for cleaning after
you move out).
Person to contact for more information (owner, manager or caretaker).
Utilities (electricity, natural gas, water) and who is responsible for
paying for these services.
5. It is easy to use the listings. You can look through them at
Housing & Residential Life, find the apartments, houses or rooms you
want to see and telephone the person who gave the information. You may
use the telephone at no cost in the office. Although you can use this
service with-out assistance, staff is available to assist you if
needed. There are many things to consider when choosing a place to
live - location, cost, parking and other matters. You may come to
Housing & Residential Life as often as you like. New listings are
received in the office every day.
