I'm pleased to say that around three years after we started trying out Umlaut we have now gone live. That probably makes it sound like it was really hard to get Umlaut working, but it wasn't really, and each new release has been easier. Apart from problems getting servers set up, we have just had too much else to do and it has had the status of a spare-time project. That's a shame because it is a great improvement over the WebBridge interface we were using before.

Unlike other installations, we are using Umlaut with WebBridge, the OpenURL resolver from Innovative Interfaces. We also get details of hard-copy books and journals via Z39.50 from Millennium.

We've gone for a soft launch. Umlaut is not being used straight away as our general OpenURL resolver, but only as the resolver for the Primo system which we have also just soft-launched. So we should be able to monitor performance and make sure everything is OK before switching the WebBridge interface off completely. When linking through from a record in Primo which comes from our Millennium system, the Umlaut Millennium service adaptor will read the private data Primo sends, and locate the bibliographic record in Millennium from the bib number rather than using ISBN or author/title searches.

WebBridge does not have much in the way of referent enhancement built in, so we use using service adaptors for PubMed and CrossRef to assist with this. SFX users will probably be relying on SFX for this functionality. We have also added service adaptors for the JournalTOCs service and for Altmetric.

I am hoping we can get approval to release all this code back to the project soon, but don't hold your breath: I've been chasing the decision-makers for the last six months!

Our resolver is at http://connexions.durham.ac.uk/
Our Primo is at https://discover.durham.ac.uk/

We have not implemented the A-Z journal search functionality yet. I believe we can write a plugin or adaptor to connect Umlaut to our own A-Z journal database but I have not yet been able to find information on how to go about this yet.

A few examples:
http://bit.ly/1yySe40
This OpenURL was from me typing details into the search form at http://connexions.durham.ac.uk/
We are not advertising this yet, so it does not matter if it doesn't work. As you can see, a warning appears to say Umlaut does not know about the journal name. I'm guessing this is to do with not having the A-Z database of journal titles.

http://bit.ly/1yySoIo
A text book with lots of copies retrieved from Millennium.

http://bit.ly/1ppOTKP
A journal article.

http://bit.ly/1ucPIMB
Another journal article, which demonstrates the JournalTOCs and Altmetric service adaptors. It also currently demonstrates a bug in my Millennium service adaptor which I will now try to go and fix!

Awesome! I will add you to the wiki page of Umlaut installations at
https://github.com/team-umlaut/umlaut/wiki/Umlaut-installations

I would be SUPER interested in you sharing your custom code, especially
the III WebBridge adapter. It would really be an advance to say that
code is already written to use Umlaut with non-SFX resolvers.

Are you using Rails4/Umlaut4 yet, or still 3? I expect the Umlaut 4.0
final to come out pretty shortly (next week or two) -- I just like to
test it extensively in my own environment before marking it a stable
release, but it's looking pretty good.

Yeah, sorry, that's kind of a sketchy feature, maybe it should go away
entirely (or be off by default?)

But you can just turn it off by adding:

entry_not_in_kb_warning false

to your umlaut_config.configure block in your local
./app/controllers/umlaut_controller.rb. Already included in any Umlaut
feature.

I also REALLY want your altmetric adapter! Is altmetric a free service?

Come on man, you've benefited from many hours of coding I've done on
Umlaut, share back your work! I know it's not under your control, but
very frustrating to me.

They say in Python world that it's easier to ask forgiveness than to ask permission, just saying...
