Bulk purchase discounts have historically only happened in May/June
through the deal organized originally (and still possibly currently)
through CAEN.

Is there any SUN bulk purchase in the works on campus now or is it too
odd a time for that?
I am interested in knowing the pricing and configurations of Ultra-5
and Ultra-10
machines. I have SPARC-20 machines that I would like to upgrade. Is
a SUN trade-in
the only possible deal I could get for now?
Thanks.

Unfortunately, you missed the buy-one-get-one-free deal this summer.
Sun _is_ running a special now, though:
http://store.sun.com/docs/specials/education/edupromo.jhtml
It's good until December 22nd. My _opinion_ is that this isn't
much of a special at all as far as the Ultra 5 and 10 machines
are concerned (note that they do not come with monitors), but that
there are some very good deals on higher-end machines. For
example, we just bought a E220R that would have cost us $22,000
at our normal educational discount for only $15.5K.
You _can_ trade in old machines to get an even bigger discount on
the new ones being offered as part of the special. Contact our
Sun rep, Anna Golubeva, (248) 948-2724, for details.
Usually the only bulk purchase is the CAEN sale which normally
occurs during the spring half-term. Normally the CAEN sale prices
are as low as you can get from Sun, although last year's matching
grant deal made last year an exception.
