We have an HP LaserJet 8100 series printer.
A text file printed on this printer using "lpr" does not get formatted
correctly.
Only a couple of lines or so are printed. Each subsequent line begins
right
below the end of the previous line. So, when say, the second or third
line,
run out of the right edge of the paper, nothing gets printed after
that.
It has an HP JetDirect card for network connectivity. And the "Installed
Personalities" include
PCL, PCLXL and PS.
Using "enscript" to print a text file works okay. It comes out as postscript.
I was wondering how I might print native ASCII on this
printer with correct formatting.
Thanks.

Look at the man page for printcap (if you're using a BSD style
print setup), or hunt through the lp variety of man pages
if you're using SysV printing. There's an entry that you can
set on either system that basically says "Give me a carriage
return after each line along with the standard line-feed"

What you need is CR/LF translation, as the other posters have said.
You say you're using lpr. Hopefully you have the lpf filter available.
(If you're using LPRng printing, you will).
Set the if= printcap entry to point to this filter. For example,
here's a fairly dumb printcap entry that sends justs directly to the
BSD "spooler" running on a JetDirect card on the printer, doing
CR/LF translation in the process:
p-lit-2flr|lsait:cm=HP5SiMX on 2nd floor 1007 E. Huron:\
:lp=r...@p-lit-2flr.admin.lsa.umich.edu:\
:lpr_bounce:if=/usr/ucb/lpf
Note that you'll almost certainly want to use something more
sophisticated. You'll also need to insert the correct path name
for your lpf binary.
