pam_afs: Password required but not supplied by user root

I installed transarc afs on an Ultra 5.7 and when I log in with xdm
it logs in ok with my afs password, but it doesn't give me tokens.

When I check the log the only thing I notice unusual is this message
when the computer boots up:
Oct 11 03:30:00 wilson.geo.lsa.umich.edu pam_afs: Password required but not supplied by user root
I'm not sure if this is related to my problem or not. I have doubled
checked my pam conf files and they seem ok.
What would let me log in with my afs password but not give out my
tokens?
