Given the lack of a single clearinghouse for discussions,
announcements, or to facilitate general information flow
at UM (or A2), is there any interest in creating a
umich.general newsgroup to fit that bill?

We could remove a few groups while we're at it, since these
appear to be redundant or unused:

umich.academic
umich.groups
umich.talk
umich.for_sale
umich.questions
umich.interesting
umich.www

In fact, why not reevaluate all the umich hierarchy? Much of
it seems unfocused or ignored entirely.

I agree. Maybe ITD and CAEN could add some of them into the default
.newsrc and Netscape News configure files.

it appears that umich.for_sale is used quite often, unless you're
referring to the fact that there are 2 of them.

an alternative to completely rehauling the hierarchy would be to instruct

students in the use of newsgroups. i have found that many students do not

read newsgroups simply because they are unfamiliar with the concept. i
think that if students were taught to read newsgroups in a similar way in
which they were taught to read e-mail, they might be more widely used.
class announcements, departmental meetings and seminars, and career
development info could be incorporated so that our inboxes aren't filled
with things that are not of general interest.

and, we could avoid all those mass-mailings about subleases and football
tickets and the like. which i find tremendously annyoing.
