Japanese War Crimes & Trials: Murder under the Sun.

Though most people have heard of the Nuremberg War Crimes Trials,
few know that Japanese officers were also tried for crimes against
humanity. This program deals with the horrific stories of those held
captive, and the trials of those held responsible for the greatest
crimes.

2. Ma Hsiang Fang Scholarship Accepts Applications ...................... 40

The Sun Yat-sen Foundation is pleased to announce that the 1999 Ma Hsiang
Fang Scholarship is now accepting applications. Tow to four scholarships of
US $2,000 - 4,000 each will be awarded. The exact amount depends on the
final total number of scholarships awarded. Applicants should be srudents
from Mainland China who are engaged in dissertation writhing for the PhD
degree in the humanities or social sciences at a university in New England
area (Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Hamshire, Maine and
Vermont) and who are not permanaent residents or citizen.

Application forms are available by writing or e-mai to Ma Hsiang Fang
Scholarship, c/o Professor Y.H. Ma, Department of Chemical Engineering,
Worcester Polytechnic Institute, 100 Institute Road, Worcester, MA 01609
(Fax: 508 831 5867; e-mail yh...@wpi.edu). The application deadline is June
15, 1999. A complete application should consist of the following:

(1) Official application form.
(2) Applicant's resume.
(3) One copy of official transcript.
(4) Two recommendations from the applicant's dissertation advisors.
(5) Proof of PhD candidatcy from the applicant's department.
(6) A dissertaion summary (no longer than 1,000 words) and proof of its
accepatnce by the applicant's department.
(7) A photocopy of the applicant's passport.

Applicants should specify in their applications whether they are applying
for or have already received other sources of financial assistance. Those
who do not have any kind of financial support from their department or
university should submit proof from their department or university. Those
without any financial support from any source will receive priority
consideration. All applications will be reviewed by a panel of scholars
from universities and colleges in the New England area. Awardees will be
notified by early fall of 1999.

The scholarship, established with a donatin of U.S. $100,000 by Mr. Ma
Shu-Li, President of the Sun Yat-sen Foundation, in memory of his father,
Ma Hsiang Fang, is to provide some assistance to outstanding students from
Mainland China in expediting their dissertation research and writing.
