Asian and Pacific Islanders only make up 6% of the current 3.2 million
individuals registered nationally to be potential bone marrow donors.
Patients will most likely find compatible marrow from someone within the
same ethnicity. However, Asian donors comprise a small minority of the
national registry.
To register is easy. Give blood to be tested. It only takes 15 minutes.

(4) Unusual temperature fluctuation with a boy of two years old. From:
Cheng-C...@esbs1.u-strasbg.fr (Cheng-Cai Zhang (ESBS))
We have a kid of tow years old. He is an apparently healthy boy until this
summer. He is 15 kg and 93 cm. Since June this year, he regularly got
sympotums like the following: it starts with a body temperature around
38°C, with cough and nose blocked (but not running), as well as a mild
diarrhoea. After a few days, the temperature goes up to 39-40°C, without
apparent sign of strong infection, as examed by his doctor. The last time
he spent 10 days in the hospital, he got a full examination. The doctor
found that the level of CRP (C-reactive protein) is at about 200 mg/l, and
white corpuscle at 37600 /mm3. A radiograph showed an atypical weak
infection in the right lung. Exams for Mycoplasma, Chlamidia and
Legionelle were negative. Nothing turned up in the urine exam. Treatment
with Penicilline was not very effective since it brought CRP to 40 mg/l
only. It is with Josamycine that the CRP returns to normal level, and the
temperature was also brought back. But the bacterium (if it was) has never
been identified.
Since he came home from the hospital, we monitored his temperature closely
everyday. We found that he most of the day exhibits a high fluctuation in
his body temperature: normal in the morning, 38°C at 4-6 O'clock in the
afternoon, and about 36.4-36.5 in the evening. The 38°C was displayed at
the begining about once in 2-3 days, then it became daily. And afterwards,
the temperature goes further up with, again, symptums of cough, nose
blocked, mild diarrhoea and lost appetite. It seems that all starts again.
Doctors could not explain why his daily temperature changes so much
(36-38°C) even when he appears very healthy. He does have a total
immunoglobulines (IGE) that is much higher than normal (280 UI/ml instread
of less than 45 UI/ml), suggesting that he is allergic to something.
Those who know similar cases or, could explain the symptums, please
contact Dr. C.-C. Zhang, at ccz...@esbs.u-strasbg.fr, or fax:
33-3-88655330, or phone 33-3-88655290.
