1. Chinese Students at Ohio Protested in Front of State House ........... 18
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: RedFox <F...@hotmail.com> Tue, 11 May 1999 00:17:43 -0400
Forwarded by: Bo Xiong
About 100 students gathered at the Columbus state house to protest the
NATO bombing of the Chinese embassy, and to promote a
peaceful solution for the Kosovo crisis.
The demonstration lasted about 2 hours. Due to the long distance of bus
driving, some students didnot get to the spot on time. Some
students thought that the demostration should start at the Oval.
The US newspaper reported the demonstration and the rampage in Beijing,
Shanhai, etc, and they reported the applologies by the US goverment.
However, without exception, they put the demonstration in the front
page, instead of the Barbaric Bombing. Some western news showed the bombed
embassy, but the house looks very well!

From: Yu Wang <yuw...@iastate.edu> Tue, 11 May 1999 21:37:08 CDT
We have just done a successful protest against NATO's bombing Chinese
Embassy in Yugoslavia. We started with one minute's mourning for 3 dead
persons of the bombing, handing out the fliers, expressing our anger and
opinions, showing our strength and unity in the front of the Park Library.
Then we went to City Hall, walking around the Public library, post office
and so on. We ended the protest with another one minute's mourning, after
that we sang the national anthem.
Unite up, Chinese people! Do our best !

Dear Chinese Fellows,
1. We would like to inform you about the latest status of our plans on
tomorrow's protest. Please note that several people are working very
hard to make this happen. So if you can give a hand in any way, please do.
First of all, CSSFA has been trying very hard to get the transportation to
go to Chicago downtown. We just got the words that unfortunately we won't
be able to get the buses so anyone who wants to go to downtown Chicago has
to arrange the transportation among small circles. We apologize for this
inconvenience and the info. about the downtown Chicago protest will
be posted later for your reference.
If you need fliers, posters, etc. please contact Mr. Bai xuefeng at
xf...@nwu.edu. Please note that there is no conflict between this event
and our own event. We understand that for those of you decide to go to
Chicago, it will be a bit too much. The only reason we decide to
keep our own activity is that the notice from UIC is too late and we've
already started the planning.
2. Now about our own protest from 4-6pm on campus. Here are the details and
a few logistics.
The event is approved by Northwestern Students Affair Department and
University police. We are going to gather at the Tech parking lot at 3:45PM,
starting from the sidewalk of sheridan road in front of Tech. We plan to
spend 5-10 minutes holding signs, distributing open letters to pedestrians,
then we are going to march to University Arch along Sheridan sidewalk.
We will do the same before marching to the ROCK, then we plan to
have someone read the open letter and silently sitting there till 6pm before
we call it off. A few things we would like everyone to bear in mind.
(1). This is going to be a peaceful demonstration and it is concensus among
those who participated the meeting yesterday. So there won't be any
shouting, personal attacking, cursing, etc. Remember it is also to our
interest to avoid any trouble. This is especially important for CSSA
organization. Same thing applies if any local newscoverage is going to
be present which we are currently trying to inform them such as Daily
Northwestern, Evanston Review, etc.
(2). A suggestion by a lot of students saying that we should dress in a
conservative manner, dark suit or dark dress is very appropriate.
(3). We strongly encourage everyone to join this event but we totally understand
your decision if you decide not to. Please contact your deparment executives
of CSSA to let them know that you will be there. We DO need to know
approximately how many people will be joining us.
We've already notified Daily Northwestern which will report
our demonstration, International Student office, Evanston Review,
Chicago Tribune, etc. Please join us to express your anger and once
again, together we'll make a difference.
In summary,
1. Gathering at Tech parking lot at 3:45PM sharp. Posters, fliers,
copy of open letters will be distributed to partipants
2. The dress code is conservative.
3. Contact CSSA department executives
Any suggestions are welcome.

5. Students Draft Open Letter to Campus Newspaper ...................... 35
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Forwarded by Yungui Ding
Dear all,
Here is a draft of the open letter that the CSSA of NU is writing for
the Daily Northwestern. It is open to comments and suggestions. Please
respond before Wednesday (5/12).
--------
On May 7, 1999, three NATO missiles hit Chinese Embassy in Belgrade of
Yugoslavia, killing three innocent Chinese journalists. More than 20
people were seriously injured and most of them are in critical condition.
The NATO explanation changes day by day and is totally unconvincing. In
the latest version, they blamed on an outdated map that was given by CIA.
It is hard to believe that the CIA, one of the largest intelligence
agencies in the world, could provide an outdated map for massive air
strikes. It is even harder to believe that the Chinese Embassy, which had
been present in the current place for 4 years, could be misidentified.
As a group of Chinese students and scholars at Northwestern, we strongly
condemn NATO's bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Yugoslavia. It is in
violation of the international laws and norms of international relations.
Not only are we angered by the brutal killings, we are also deeply
disappointed by the NATOUs defensive reactions. The bombing was a contempt
to the sovereignty of China. A pale "regret" or a brief "apology" is
definitely an irresponsible response.
We believe that justice should be done. We strongly demand that the US-led
NATO should:
1) apologize formally and sincerely to the victims, their families, and
China;
2) investigate thoroughly the incident and disclose fully the results;
3) punish the responsible party;
4) provide comprehensive compensations for the victims and their families.

6. Comment From an American on the Bombing ............................. 52
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Roger Groce <rgr...@home.com>
I am a 35 year-old American male living in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, in
the United States. I was born and have always lived in the United
States.
I want to express my deepest sympathy for the tragic loss of life and
property to the Chinese people when the NATO bombs struck the Chinese
Embassy in Yugoslavia. I have to believe that my country would never
intentionally harm innocent civilians, and that the bombing was entirely
a horrible accident, and one which deserves an unending apology from the
United States and NATO.
Whatever the truth turns out to be, the citizens of the United States
believe that unspeakable crimes were/are being committed upon innocent
citizens of Kosovo, including mass killings of the men, raping of the
women, the burning of houses and building of public record - all to
eliminate the occupants of an independent state or country. Most of us
knew nothing of Kosovo before the bombing. Bombing military targets, and
not even directly the troops, we could understand. When we're told that
only a dozen or so targets out of 18,000 bombed have hit off target
(possible civilian), we hurt for the people who suffer. There should
not be one single mistake which costs innocent lives, especially such an
enormous oversight, such as not knowing the location of the Chinese
Embassy. Our country and NATO made an enormous mistake, and I hope our
government leaders offering an immediate apology helps remove some of
the anger from the hurt I'm sure the Chinese people are feeling.
Last week one of the largest tornados ever recorded in history tore
through a large section of my city, rendering an estimated 10,000 homes
unliveable, and completely removed hundreds of homes to their
foundation. We are a people who reach out and help each other in times
of crisis - Black, White, Hispanic, Japanese, French, Italian, Russian,
and of course, Chinese, among many others. We're taught to respect
other cultures and the rights of people to live in freedom and peace.
When these tragedies occur around the world, we want to reach out to you
also, and offer ourselves to you for friendship, comfort and a helping
hand when needed.
I hope the Chinese people can understand that this terrible accident in
no way reflects a hostile or malicious intention on behalf of the people
of the United States, at least for myself and those that I know. I am
very sorry for what has happened, and I hope nothing can stop us from
becoming closer to each other as citizens of the Earth, in both love and
mutual respect.
Sincerely,
Roger G
