1. VP of Chinese Academy of Science Visits Northwestern University ...... 30
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Yongjian Sun, Northwestern Chinese Student Netowrk
This is a summary on August 29's meeting with Dr. Bai Chunli, Vice
President of Chinese Academy of Science (CSA).
Dr. Bai, accompanied with a group of CSA representatives and counselors
at Chicago General Consulate, visited Northwestern University on
8/29/99. After an one-hour-tour to laboratories of Chemistry Department
and Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Dr. Bai and his
group had a two hour meeting with NWU students and scholars. Dr. Bai
gave an exclusive presentation on the new recruiting projects in CSA,
which include CSA Hundred Talents Program, Visiting Scholar Program,
Knowledge Innovation Program, and so on. He brought forward the urgency
of need for talented young scholars in our motherland China.
Totally twenty NWU students and scholars from Department of chemistry,
physics, math, MSE and ECE attended the meeting. Many attendees asked
lot of good questions regarding candidacy evaluation, procedures of
application, salary expectation, etc. This meeting was very successful
in terms of mutual understanding and communication. It also could be
beneficial to those interested in contributing their knowledge and
talents to the development of our mother country.
Besides the meeting, Dr. Bai left many brochures to NWU CSSA which have
detailed description on recruiting programs and even lists of job
openings in CSA system. We welcome everyone to learn more about these
programs. Please contact Yongjian Sun, if you are interested. In
addition, CSSA will have some relevant sites linked to CSSA main site.

3. Information Exchange: Less Student Visas Issued in China ............. 28
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: NAFSA Network, 08/10/99; Forwarded by Bo XIONG
Many foreign student advisors on the NAFSA Network agreed that the number
of student visas being issued by US posts in China is significantly
dropping. It has always been difficult, but now is virtually impossible.
Independently funded students, regardless of how rich they are--rejected!
Young and single--rejected! Undergraduate--rejected!
Foreign student advisors on the NAFSA Net are saying that: "I have just
about decided to tell undergrad applicants from China FORGET IT."
The "Best bets" are, according to Susan D Lesser of Central Connecticut
State University:
Students receiving visas are over 30 or 35 years of age, looking for
J-visas, are on true exchange programs, are pursing graduate degree or
higher, are leaving spouse and child in China, are seeking to come to the
US for fewer than 3 years, can demonstrate a link between their university
in China and the US institution, have permission from their home
institution for their studies in the US, and CAN DOCUMENT THAT THEY WILL
UNEQUIVOCABLY RETURN TO CHINA UPON COMPLETION OF THEIR PROGRAM.
Never send a student with simply a bank statement as proof of finances.
The bank statements must be accompanied by job contracts, letters from an
employer, tax documents, pay stubs). Proof of the monies source is required.

4. Volunteers in NY Area Needed for "Make Children Smile" ............... 46
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
From Daxi Li, CASB Network 9/15/99
[For detailed activity arrangement, please contact Jennifer Teng of Smile
Train at 212-689-9199 or Mr. Wu at 212-263-1073. For more information, call
Angie Huang at 301-564-1222.]
The China Charity Federation and the Smile Train nonprofit organization have
sponsored the surgical operations for children born with cleft lip (harelip)
deformity in China. The program has helped nearly 2000 deformed children
otherwise too poor to undergo surgical operations in China. This charity
event has brought smiles to so many children with this deformity and is
loudly applauded by people in China.
On September 14, two children, aged 8 and 11, arrived in Yew York from China
to undergo cleft lip correctional surgeries here in the U.S. The surgical
procedure will be recorded and made into instructional vedio tapes. The
vedio tape will help Chinese doctors in China to master the new technology
in cleft lip reconstruction operations.
Mr. Wu Yijin from the China Charity Federation has accompanied the children
from Beijing and will stay with them as their guidance. They will stay at
the Greenberg Hall apartment on the First Avenue across from the NYU Medical
Center hospital until October 5th. Smile Train has hired nurse/nanny to
take care of the children during their three weeks of stay.
The CCF and the Smile Train need volunteers who can fill in some hours to be
with the children as their playmates and side seen guides during the three
weeks. If you have children of similar age, please bring your children too.
For detailed activity arrangement, please contact Jennifer Teng of Smile
Train at 212-689-9199 or Mr. Wu at 212-263-1073. For more information, call
Angie Huang at 301-564-1222.
Please help if you can.
China Charity Federation (CCF) is a non-governmental charity organization in
China formed as a national legal entity approved by the Chinese government.
(Check www.china-charity.org on web.)
The Smile Train is a non-profit U.S. organization that is committed to
eradicating the problem of cleft lips and palates. (Check

(1) URGENT--Bone Marrow Donor
From: hui xiang <hxgm...@yahoo.com> 9/15/99
I am writing this general mailing because I desperately need to ask for
your help to save the lives of my identical twin sons, Alexander and Oscar
Chan. They are eight months old and were diagnosed last month with a
life-threatening blood and immune disorder which is characterised by eczema,
low neutrophils and low platelets. There is one thing that can save them and
that is a bone marrow transplant.
We have searched the international bone marrow databases and there are
no matches. The problem is a B46 antigen which they have inherited
from me. It is only found in oriental people or anybody with ancestry in
Far / South > East Asia.
If you know of any oriental people / anyone with oriental ancestry
(mixed ethnicity) who wishes to help, or you want to help with an appeal for
donors, please contact your local Bone Marrow Donor
Registry (for the UK, it's the Anthony Nolan Centre - see below).
Alternatively, you may wish to contact me personally:

Only a small amount of blood is required for tissue typing. You would then
go onto a general bone marrow register (you could also save the lives of
others).

(2) Help Needed for Multiple Sclerosis Patient
From: Yuping Cheng <" cheng.128"@osu.edu> 9/3/99
I am diseased with Multiple Sclerosis.
In January of 1996, I was hit by a bicycle on one of my hips in China. I
felt
numb and painful on my right leg and waist right away. That afternoon, I
started a fever and vomiting and couldn't walk. That evening, the pain
was worse.
The second day, I went to see a surgeon. He gave me a 'plaster' (?). The
pain was removed, but my right leg still felt weak and numb and all my
arms and legs felt numb; out of control. I tried massage in hospital
later, and no result.
I was pregnant from March 1996 till January 1997 when my baby was born.
After her birth, my disease got worse. I couldn't walk at all. I went to
a hospital in Beijing in April, and was told my disease was MS. They
treated me with hormones, and I felt better. In August and September I
was much better. I could ride my bicycle, walk short distances and
gohiking.
But from December 1997 to spring 1998, the disease came back and more
and more serious. I was not able to walk again. I went to a hospital in
Shanghai in June, and was treated with hormone, got better, and was able
to walk. I took some Mongolian (herbal) medicine and felt better, but
still felt numb and soft in my legs, not able to walk properly, and
needing help to go out.
I hope there is some way to cure my illness, or control it somehow. I
need help! If you have any information on any medicines in US which
would cure or ease this disease,
could you send e-mail to chen...@osu.edu.

(3) Appeal for medical help for a 7-year-old boy
From: nn...@rs733.gsfc.nasa.gov (Edwin H Fung) 9/2/99
I would like to appeal for help, especially to those in the medical community,
on behalf of a seven-year-old boy, Kin Chung Fung, who is suffering from a
tumor on the brain stem. Kin Chung lives in Hong Kong with his parents and
they have apparently exhausted whatever medical help they can get from their
doctors in Hong Kong. His conditions are described in more detail in the
following e-mail correspondence from his aunt:
Since medical technology is more advanced in the U.S., I wonder whether there
are more advanced treatments that can be applied to Kin Chung's condition. If
you know of any such treatments, or if you know someone who may know about
them, please contact me by e-mail at "nn...@rs733.gsfc.nasa.gov".
** Details on Kin Chung's Disease:
He had right eye diplopia that started suddenly in March, 99. His
parents had consulted two eye specialists and was then referred to a
neurology specialist. After M.R.I. examination, the doctor
concluded that he had 'pontic glioma'. Because of the tumour's position in
the brain stem, it is not operable. Kin Chung then received a course of
radiotherapy treatment. He had stayed in Queen Mary Hospital for 6 weeks
and received 30 times radiotherapy exposures. Another M.R.I. examination
done in July, 99 revealed that the tumour had diminished about 1/3 in size.
Now, he is on a drug called 'Tamoxifen'. The doctor said the survival of
patients with brain tumour on this drug is 12-32 months, significantly
exceeding the median of 10 months of patients treated with radiation only.
The doctor also suggested chemotherapy but this had been rejected by his
parents due to the terrible side effects foreseen. The doctor said he had
nothing more to offer and the aim of treatment is to extend the child's
survival period only!

(4) Medical Help Needed for Metastatic Colon Cancer Patient
From: Lihong Wang <lw...@tamu.edu> 9/2/99
A 54 year old woman suffering from colon cancer, who was operated on 2
years ago,
has recently been diagnosed with the spread of her cancer to the liver and
lung.
She is scheduled to begin chemotherapy, but the odds of responding are not
high.
She is now in desperate need for an alternative therapy, which could
increase her
chances of survival. Any information in this regard would be very much
appreciated. Please email your recommendations (therapies or doctors) to
bne...@earthlink.net. Thank you.
