(2) I Appreciate Your Program on Asian American Concerns
From: "Guokui Liu" <gl...@anlchm.chm.anl.gov> 6/29/1999
After I watched last night's ABC Nightline program on Asian Americans, I
sent Nightline an e-mail with following comments. I encourage all of you do
the samething.
******
Dear Editor:
I am a loyal viewer of Nightline. Among all of your good programs, the
topic of "Asian Americans" that you broadcast on June 28th most deeply
touched my heart. I believe that millions of Asian Americans share the
same feeling of appreciation of your work. As happened to many other
Asian American scientists loyally working in the National Laboratories,
the recent Chinese spys allegations and some over reacted and modified
media coverage on this issue have deeply hurt me. The voices of several
Asian Americans you brought to the program did represent my concerns. I
hope that Nightline and other ABC programs will continue to fairly treat
the issues relevant to Asian American community and to give us more
opportunities to voice our opinions.
Sincerely,
Guokui Liu

(3) We Should Let the Media Hear Us
From: H Zia <hz...@usa.net> 6/30/1999
Also, I would encourage everyone to post a message on the ABC News
"Message Board" which you can access from the site listed above. You have
to register first, and can use any message name you want. Then you have to
get back to the above Nightline site.
This is the first of any kind of national network news story on Asian
Americans that I can recall. There were no such program pieces during the
18 months of the campaign finance coverage, or after the LA riots, or
during the 5 years of the Vincent Chin case. The producers do check the
message boards for feedback, and they pay attention to whether any Asian
Americans even watch their programs. So please give them feedback, good
bad or ugly, to let them know we do watch and we want to see more coverage
of Asian American concerns.
By the way, I thought that Nightline did an excellent job. They clearly
researched the issue, made the connection to history--the internment, the
red scare--and had appropriate people quoted. In my opinion, this is about
as good as it's going to get on network news. Also, I understand that they
tried to find some prominent scientists and Chinese Americans like I.M.
Pei to speak up but that none were willing. Even though Nightline went to
the Committee of 100 conference, no spokesperson was willing to be quoted
on behalf of the group. The problem of finding and encouraging APAs to be
media sources for news is one that we will have to address.
Thanks,
Helen Zia
