Abstract

Looking at Gartner’s predictions of the top 10 strategic technology trends, we find that Big Data is actually a good fit for one of the central themes of many of the predicted technology trends.  Mobile devices will be identified as one of the primary driving factors in Big Data.  The infrastructure role of Cloud Computing with respect to Big Data will also be discussed.  A linkage between Open Data and Big Data as well as the associated application models will be examined.  We will look at history to provide us with some guidelines to gain a high-level perspective on Big Data and how it influences academic research, our social lives and its impact on the future.

Chih-Kung (C.K.) Lee received his B.S. in Civil Engineering from National Taiwan University and his Ph.D. in Theoretical & Applied Mechanics from Cornell University.  In 1987, he joined IBM’s Almaden Research Center in San Jose, California as a Research Staff Member where his R&D work was primarily concentrated in the interdisciplinary areas related to magnetic disk drives, optoelectronic systems, metrology systems, and piezoelectric systems.

He joined the faculty of National Taiwan University’s Institute of Applied Mechanics in 1994.  His research work on distributed piezoelectric sensors and actuators has made him a well- recognized expert in the areas of flexible structure control, shock sensing, and sensor development.  He co-founded the National Taiwan University Nano-Bio-MEMS research group.  The Group’s perspective of emphasizing social responsibility as a cornerstone of a world class research team truly sets the team apart from other research teams.  He is concurrently a Professor at National Taiwan University’s Dept. of Engineering Science & Ocean Engineering.

Previous work experiences include Director-General of Engineering & Applied Sciences at the National Science Council (Aug. 2004 - July 2007), Executive Vice-President of the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) (Aug. 2007 - Aug. 2010), and President of the Institute for Information Industry (III) (Aug. 2010 - Sept. 2012).  Since April 2013, he was appointed by Taiwan’s National Science Council and Ministry of Economic Affairs to serve as CEO and co-PI for Phase II of Taiwan’s National Energy Program.  This important national program is the main technology vehicle to set the direction of all Taiwan’s energy programs.  His responsibilities include supervising and keeping track of all energy related research programs in Taiwan from 2014 to 2018.

He is an IoP Fellow and ASME Fellow.  He has over 200 journal publications and numerous patents.
