You can use your phone's mobile data to connect another phone, tablet, or computer to the internet. Sharing a connection this way is called tethering or using a hotspot. Some phones can share Wi-Fi connection by tethering.

I hope this is a quick question - quick answer. Is it possible for laptop to connect over VPN through Android phone running OpenVPN app connected to the OpenVPN server? I tested it using the Android phone as both Wifi hotspot and USB tethering and it did not seem to work - I could not see/connect to the hardware on the VPN connected network. I wonder if there is some setting that I need to set on Android phone which will allow me to do this.

I know, it's a weird question and you may ask why I need this. The reason is that my provider granted me mobile data usage, that I only can use for sharing via hotspot. I don't know how they do it but it really only works for other devices connected to my hotspot - I myself can't use it. I also don't have a spare phone where i could put in my sim card and let it act as a router.

I would like to set sync on wifi, with the option of adding a list of SSID that can be used (if the list is empty, use any). In my case the list would be home, work and a few known networks I use regularly, but I guess other peoples requirements might vary.

I am trying to connect my Android 12 phone to wifi hotspot initiated on Ubuntu 22.04. However the wifi hotspot is not visible in the list of available networks when set on WPA security. When I switch to open security, it is visible and works well. However I cannot leave it on open security.I tried the solutions given in the other post related to older Ubuntu versions as well as new one like the ones inubuntu 18.04 hotspot not visibleI have tried below options:

To work around this, you can just these setting in the Hotspot.nmconnection.
Type (you can use nano, vi,emac. BUt Gui is easiest for new people) sudo gedit /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/Hotspot.nmconnectionand edit [wifi-security] part to be this(change psk to your password):

Thankfully, there is a way to convert your Android into a WiFi repeater. Meaning, your Android is connected to a WiFi network and you can create a hotspot sharing the same WiFi network. And both devices will be able to use the Internet at the same time. So, next time you visit a Hotel or an Airport, where they give you internet access in only one device, using this workaround you can turn on Android smartphone as a WiFi repeater, and get Internet in multiple devices. No need to rely on mobile data and the speed is pretty fast as well.

The reason why there is no default setting in Android to activate WiFi repeater is because of the limitation of the network adapter of Android, it does not let you create two connection at the same time, i.e. if you try to create a hotspot while the WiFi is ON, the Android system will automatically turn OFF the WiFi.

It may not be as fast as regular Wi-Fi, but in a pinch, a hotspot can help you quickly share a document via email, download something or read up on the latest news. If you've never set up a hotspot on your phone, but want to learn, here's everything you need to know.

While your phone may potentially have the ability to become a mobile hotspot, that doesn't necessarily mean that you have the phone plan or data available to enable it. The easiest way to check is to go online and look at your phone plan or call and ask.

Many phone plans -- monthly and prepaid -- include a high-speed mobile hotspot for no additional charge. However, they're usually capped, so once you pass the monthly high-speed allowance, you'll be throttled down to lower speeds, but you'll still be able to use the hotspot unlimited.

There are also add-ons you can include in your phone plan that can provide you with more high-speed hotspot data, in case you use hotspots often. Check your carrier's phone plan and read up on your specific hotspot plan to see what it offers.

In Settings, go to Personal Hotspot and toggle on Allow Others to Join. Underneath that, you'll see the default password needed to connect to your hotspot. You can change this password to whatever you want, but it must contain at least eight characters.

Although I personally leave it toggled off, you can enable Maximize Compatibility to ensure your device connects to the hotspot. However, your internet performance may be reduced because of it.

The most popular way is via Wi-Fi. On your computer or other device, go to your Wi-Fi options, find the name of your iPhone and enter the hotspot password. That will connect you to your hotspot and give your other device internet access. If you don't know the name of your iPhone, go to General > About > Name.

You can also connect your iPhone to your computer using a cable, such as a lighting to USB cable, to use the hotspot. Once it's plugged in, choose your iPhone from the list of network services in your settings and enter the hotspot password.

Once that's all set, you can move over to your computer, laptop or other device, open your Wi-Fi settings, find the hotspot name and enter the password. This will connect your Android's internet to your other device -- you can connect up to 10 other devices, but your connection may be very slow if you take that route for all these devices.

I installed the pushed update for Android 13 on my Zenfone 8, and after that my WiFi hotspot stopped working. The option is no longer under its typical location in Settings > Network & Internet, it must be searched for or accessed via shortcut. I have tried changing all Hotspot settings, factory reset the phone, and I even contacted my wireless provider to confirm service is active for my account. I have read that downgrading to Android 12 enables WiFi functionality again, but I'd like to know how ASUS will address the issue.

Same issue. Pls help ASUS. I USED hours of hotspot before upgrading and was perfect, now the toggle button doesn't turn it on. Tried restart and messing with setting and third party apps, nothing works

So I wanna connect TL-WR940N to my mobile phone wifi hotspot and than share that internet across all devices in home , trying to configure TL-WR940N Range Extender but for now without success, can anyone help?

Many, but not all, Android phones I have come accross were using the IP address 192.168.43.1 for their Wi-Fi hotspot feature, which would mean the Static IP address you enter during the Quick Setup of the Range Extender could be set to any address from 192.168.43.2 to 192.168.43.255.

But as I indicated, some Android phones use a different subnet, so you need to check that on your Redmi phone. Just connect a computer or another phone to the hotspot of the Redmi and then look up the IP address of the "Gateway", which will be your Redmi's IP address. The "Static IP" of your TL-WR940N in range extender mode needs to be in the same subnet.

Issue is when I configure all through Quick Setup and connect to TL-WR940N via cable or wifi Pc or tablet or TV I dont have internet on those devices and cannot access router TL-WR940N anymore neither through 192.168.43.1 or address and need to reset TL-WR940N

My network is 100% wifi.
With my android phone connected to wifi, if I decide to activate the phone as a hotspot it disables all wifi to the phone and the phone becomes an AP and uses my cellular data for the wifi hotspot. Other than using my cellular data my phone has no internet connections in this config.

If you are using the PC as a wifi hotspot, does that mean that you have ethernet to the pc then the PC is the hotspot for wifi? Or is the router a wifi hotspot (AP) and you are also trying to use the PC as an additional hotspot?

This likely to be a regression in code (but may be something else). Please post the output of inxi -Nxx followed by dmesg grep -i wl so we can see the hardware config and what the system is doing during boot with the wifi interface.

According to the output you posted, wlp3s0 is only being configured with IPv6. I suspect you may need to look at the config for your hotspot and verify that it is properly set up for IPv4. I should also have asked for the output of ip a so we could see the ip config on that interface as well, but the dmesg output confirms it is only being configured as IPv6.

Colbert says that, when he used a MiFi unit with a tablet, whilst he was searching around the Android 3.x interface to enter the MiFi's passphrase, he found the Asus tablet had already logged into the MiFi hotspot.

"As I looked further into this puzzling situation, I noticed that not only was my Virgin Hotspot discovered and attached, but a list of other hotspots, including the hotspot at my campground (a 45-minute drive away) were also listed in the Eee Pad's hotspot list", he adds.

Colbert went on to say that the only conclusion that you can draw from this is obvious: Google is storing not only a list of what hotspots you have visited, but any private encryption keys necessary to connect to those hotspots in the cloud.
