Really never used UMDK with an SD card plugged in but when I tried nothing seems to be happening.  Other than less than 2gb/FAT32 is there any other things to watch out for?

I can say that I haven't managed to get it working with an SD card either, however I believe it is because it doesn't support SDHC cards.
I haven't actually gone through the source code, but it might be relatively easy to add support for higher capacity cards.

It does not support SDHC cards as I recall.  But realistically, you would not need the capacity of an SDHC card.

Some devices are a bit picky with the SD cards that they work with; I had a lot of joy finding one that worked with a GBA flashcart some years ago.

Furthermore, the thing to do to debug is to grab a trace at the point the SD card is being read, and study that to see where it's getting into difficulties, or run some SD-access code in GDB and see what's going on. It may just be a simple timing issue. If you fix it, send me a pull-request and I'll merge your changes.
