Club,
We will meet tomorrow of course (7 pm, 1216 HJ Patterson).
In case you missed it, we had a fantastic showing at the NOVA New Year Tournament last weekend (Justin posted a full report on Facebook).
Also, Lee Se-dol will be playing AlphaGo, a very strong program produced by Google, this week (five games, $1 million prize).
Finally, the New Jersey Open is coming up (March 19-20, in Princeton).

See you soon!

Steve Mount

The matches will be held at the Four Seasons Hotel, Seoul, starting at 1pm local time (4am GMT) on the following days:

  • Wednesday, March 9: First match (Korean date)
  • Thursday, March 10: Second match (Korean date)
  • Saturday, March 12: Third match (Korean date)
  • Sunday, March 13: Fourth match (Korean date)
  • Tuesday, March 15: Fifth match (Korean date)

Note: USA dates are one day earlier than Korean dates. In the USA, the first match will occur on Tuesday, March 8, 2016 starting at 11 pm EST.

The games will be even (no handicap), with $1 million in prize money for the winner. If AlphaGo wins, the prize money will be donated to UNICEF, STEM and Go charities. The matches will be played under Chinese rules with a komi of 7.5 (the compensation points the player who goes second receives at the end of the match). Each player will receive two hours per match with three x 60 seconds byoyomi. Each match is expected to take around 4-5 hours.

The tournament will be live-streamed on DeepMind’s YouTube channel as well as broadcast on TV throughout Asia through Korea’s Baduk TV, as well as in China, Japan, and elsewhere. There will also be a daily summary, broadcast a while after the end of the game.

The upcoming match between ALPHAGO and Lee Sedol is a significant breakthrough event for both the Go/Weiqi/Baduk and Artificial Intelligence research communities. For the gaming community, the outreach impact is boundless. For the AI community, the achievement is breathtaking.

Dear regional Go players:

You are receiving this because at some point you registered your
email with the American Go Association (AGA).  It is the only
announcement for the upcoming New Jersey Open.

*To be removed from this list*: reply to rick...@alumni.princeton.edu
with the word "unsubscribe" in the subject.  Please do this:
(1) for duplicates you receive which are not your preferred address
or (2) if you are very unlikely to attend a Princeton event now or
in the future.  Make sure you include the address at which you received
this email, if it isn't your current sending address.

The tournament will be in the same site as last year (Frist Campus
Center).

PLEASE encourage beginning players to come!  We make a special
effort to make this event beginner-friendly, and have offered
a beginner's prize (board and stones) for many years.

=====================================================
*PRE-REGISTRATION AND PRE-PAYMENT REQUIRED FOR 2016!*
=====================================================

Last year, we nearly ran out of both boards and space, and the
tournament started very late despite our best efforts.  We can
no longer accommodate on-site registration.  If you register
and cannot play, your fees will be refunded as long as you let
us know by March 17th that you aren't coming.

Register at this web site by Thursday, March 17th:

   http://www.fengyungoschool.com/?tourneys/NJO2016/

When you arrive, there will be a check-in sheet at the registration
desk and initial pairings will be posted.  Check your name off on
the list.  DO NOT START PLAY until the designated start time of
10 AM.  Announcements and attendance check will begin at 9:50. If
you are not there, you will be removed from the first round.

Cell phones don't work at the site, but if you're lost or late,
call 609-851-6351 during the last half hour of check-in.
Trains from NY/Phila arrive at 9:36.  We suggest a taxi to
Frist in order to arrive on time.

Thanks, and I hope to see you at the tournament!  Please join us.

**EMERGENCY PHONE NUMBER**   Frist help desk, 609-258-1766
(cell phones don't work at the playing site on B level).  Please
reserve this number for emergencies, otherwise call the tournament
cell number: 609-851-6351.  That number will checked during the last
half-hour before the first round both days.

The Tournament:

2016 is the 57th anniversary of the New Jersey Open, a great event
for strong players and beginners alike.  Last year over 100 players
entered, from 30 kyu to some of the strongest amateurs in the US.

The Matthews "Accelerated" pairing system ensures dan level games
will be even and lower kyu level games will be handicapped as needed.
Prizes will be awarded by the number of games won.

The Campus Center has a food court one floor above the playing
room.  University regulations prohibit smoking in the building.

Instant Ratings:

Up-to-date AGA ratings will be available when you register at the
tournament.  After each round, a "tournament rating" will be computed
which reflects your results and all your opponents' results.  At the
conclusion of the tournament, all players will receive a provisional
rating (formal AGA ratings are computed with data from multiple
tournaments, and may differ from the provisional value).  Find out
how strong you really are!

The Championship

The overall winner of the tournament will be the 2015 New Jersey State
Champion. Everyone is eligible; residing in NJ is not required.

Prizes:

Prizes will be awarded for 4 or 5 wins. The NJ State Championship
will be awarded separately in addition to 4 and 5 game winners.
To be eligible for the Championship, you must play all 5 rounds.

The Bob Ryder Memorial Beginner's Prize

To encourage beginning players to participate, all entrants 15 kyu and
below who complete at least 3 games will be entered in a drawing for a
Go set (board, stones, bowls).  Winners from previous years are not
eligible. NOTE: You, or a designated representative, must be present
at the awards ceremony to win!  If you are eligible and must leave,
make sure someone can accept it for you.

Playing 1 day only, or Skipping a Round

You may play only Saturday or Sunday for a reduced tournament fee (see
registration site).  If any particular round is inconvenient for you,
just tell the Tournament Director in advance.  You can skip a round and
rejoin the tournament later.  New registrants may enter for any round.
Register by 12:30PM for round 2 Saturday or Sunday3PM for round 3
Saturday.  The actual round start times will be determined by the
pace of play and will be posted at the registration desk.

AGA Membership

American Go Association membership is required.  The Princeton Go club
provides free youth AGA membership ($10 value) to Princeton students
joining for the first time.  If you are not a member, join online here:

   http://www.usgo.org/join-now

New adult (over 23) members receive a discounted first-year membership
for $15.  You also have the option of paying an AGA playing fee of $10
for just this tournament.  Reply to this email if you want the one-time
playing fee, or are eligible for the club new member discount. Note that
attending any other tournament within a year will require either
membership or another playing fee.

          TRAVEL DIRECTIONS:

GPS Geocoding of the Washington Road/Ivy Lane intersection:

         40.346264, -74.6538723

Coming from Route 1, turn right onto Ivy Lane at the second light
(the first one is at the bottom of the hill, just across Lake
Carnegie).  The parking lot is about 200 meters down Ivy Lane
on the uphill side, opposite the astrophysics building (small
observatory dome on top).

If you are coming from the Nassau Street end of Washington Road,
Ivy Lane is the 3rd light, just after you start down the hill.
Turn left onto Ivy Lane.  The parking lot is on the left opposite
the astrophysics building (small observatory dome on top).

There is a printable on-line map available at the www.princeton.edu
web page.  Select "Visiting Campus" from the left-hand column, then
"interactive map" at thebottom of the page.  Scroll down the list
of buildings and click "Frist Campus Center."  You will also see an
option for a printable PDF map, clearer than just printing the
graphics from your browser.

Trains from NYC and Phila. arrive in Princeton at 9:36. If you are
traveling by train, please email me the night before so I know to
expect you.

Playing Location: The Frist Campus center is located at the corner
of Washington Road and Ivy Lane.  You can park in the first gravel
lot down Ivy Lane, or the paved lots near the football stadium.  Walk
back to the light, look across the street and uphill, and you will
see a large glass wall.  Enter by the nearest door (right side of
the glass wall).  Cross the cafeteria and follow signs downstairs
one level.  Email me for handicapped access info.

Accommodations:  Princeton now has many hotels in all quality
and price ranges within a few miles.  A search on Travelocity,
Orbitz or Hotwire will find you a room in the range of $70-100
easily.

Only one hotel is within walking distance: the Nassau Inn,
(609)-921-7500), expensive (best rates $170-$200), ask for the
"weekend package".  All other hotels require a car or taxi.

Food & beverages:
Light refreshments at the site.  Food court up one level, cafe
and convenience store up 2 levels.  Many restaurants are on Nassau
Street, 5-10 minute walk uphill from campus center.

Go club,

We will meet tomorrow, as always.  7 pm in 1216 HJP.
If you come and stay late, there will be a viewing of the match between Google's AlphaGo and Lee Sedol.
This will be the second game of the match (the first starts tonight, in about two hours).
Also, there's the New Jersey Open (also below) and the Dupont Circle Beginner/Intermediate Go Club (pasted immediately below).
Lots going on!!!

Steve Mount

Dear Go Players,
Just wanted to remind you that the Dupont Circle Beginner/Intermediate Go Club will be meeting on Thursday night, 3/10/16, from 6:00 to 9:00 pm at Le Pain Quotidien Cafe near Dupont Circle.  Le Pain Quotidien is located at 2001 P Street, N.W., right near the Dupont Circle metro.  As you know, we meet the second Thursday and fourth Tuesday of each month, and, while we are open to everyone, we especially try to create a comfortable place for less experienced players to play and learn.  So, if you are not too sleepy from watching Lee Sedol vs. AlphaGo all night long, come and join us!
Best,
Laurie
P.S.  Please bring a board if you have one.
