Everyone,

Please see the below message from Kacey Wilkins regarding the STEPS
Snow Day.

Stephanie

Good morning, all: Just wanted to send a note to save-the-date for our
Mountain Day scheduled for Saturday, March 24 for 9 am - 7 pm.

In response I need to know:

1. If you plan to head west or if you're west - head east to Dillon,
Colorado. (Meeting place will be our ski house: 76 Lakeside Drive,
Dillon, Colorado)

2. What your preferred mountain activity may be:
- Cross-Country Ski
- Snow shoe
- Downhill Ski
- Snowboard
- Tubing/sledding
- Ice skating
- Drinking adult beverages by a nice fire or hot tub

(You may select more than one option!)

3. How many in your party - please feel free to invite friends!

4. Also: those with kiddos - I can arrange for childcare at our house
in Dillon, please let me know if you are interested.

Please, please respond by Sat, March 10 so we can make appropriate
plans. Hope you can make it up!

Blessings~

I will already be up in the mountains that weekend with my friends from Oklahoma.  I'm unsure of our Saturday plans, but let me know what the final agenda looks like and I will see if they are interested.  They would be most interested in cross-country or downhill, but could be persuaded into most winter activities.  No kids, but if we go cross-country or snowshoeing they have a dog that would join!

I will be with Meghan already in the Mountains most likely, but I am up for whatever, skiing would be great, and I have a new pair of cross country skiis!! I would also jump at tubing or sledding.

Hi Kacey,

I may be working but otherwise I will be able to attend. I like to snow shoe and I think I'm going up with Denton and Liza.
Thanks for working on the plans and take care.

Hi all: I'm really excited about the mountain day next Saturday! As you may recall, I offered to have our home serve as a meet up point. Please note - there is a side drive on the left side of the house for additional cars. So when you arrive, please pull up to not block any vehicles that may be leaving.

For responses:
Tracy
Liza
Denton
Mark
Mary
Kacey
Ben

For dinner/later:
Keith
Meg
+ 2 guests

(Please let me know if I've left someone out.)

For downhill skiers: Mark and Ben will be skiing and I think they'll probably decide where they head that morning. Others are more than welcome to join!

For snowshoers: I'm still researching trails, but have plenty of options in mind that are dog friendly. I suggest we pack lunches and plan to be back to the house 2 - 3 pm.

For cross country skiers: I know there are well-groomed trails at Frisco/Breckenridge Nordic Center(s). Since I've never been cross country skiing, I will defer to your expertise! :) Just plan to be back to the house by 2:30 pm for hot tub/drinks/apps.

For those up for it, we've got a great sledding hill about 100 yards from the house and plenty of sleds.

Agenda for day:
9:30 am: Arrive to ski house (76 Lakeside Drive)
10:15 am: Depart to various desitnations for mountain fun
2:30 pm: Arrive back to ski house for hot tubbing/sledding/movie time/rest (FYI: housemates will be watching b-ball games upstairs)
5:00 pm: Apps/drinks
6:00 pm: Dinner

Please bring lights snacks for and bring your own lunch. For dinner, since the houseguests are all going to be there this weekend, I wanted to suggest that we head out to the DAM Brewery. If anyone has any objections, please let me know.

I think that's all - please let me know of any other thoughts/suggestions. I'll take care of the reservation at the brewery once I know how many will be attending.

My friends decided not to come out given the current snow conditions, so count Keith and I in on the x-country crew. Looking forward to it!

I've gotten fairly strong recommendations on this hike (HERE IS LINK TO MAP):

Spruce Creek Trailhead to Francie's Cabin via Crystal Jeep Trail
DIFFICULTY: Intermediate
HUTSKI.COM FREE MAP: Francie's Cabin

TIME: 2 1/2 hours up, 1 hour down
DISTANCE: 2 miles
ELEVATION GAIN: 1,760 feet
Francie's GPS Track .txt
Francie's GPS Track .gpx

As Francie's Cabin is in the midst of such fine alpine terrain, why spend much time getting there? This route addresses that question. That said, please know that parking at the Spruce Creek Trailhead is limited. Carpool, and be ready to car shuttle if necessary. Also note that part of this route is NOT marked with blue diamonds (but does follow an obvious roadbed).

Depending on the reach of the snowplows, foot travel begins at either the official signed Spruce Creek trailhead or an informal trailhead wherever the plow turns around on the Spruce Creek Road. We'll assume you're starting from the signed trailhead, since homebuilding in this area is resulting in increasingly better snowplowing.

If you end up starting in a different spot, add appropriate time and distance to your route estimate. As always in these situations, a GPS will help immensely if you don't know the area.

From the Spruce Creek Trailhead ski snowshoe are walk SW up Spruce Creek Road a short .2 mile and turn off right (W) on the Crystal Creek jeep trail. As of 2007 this turn had no signs. There is a green gate just past the turn, but it may be covered with snow during heavy winters. From here the trail climbs steep. You'll intersect the Burro Trail after a few hundred feet. Note that Burro Trail is marked with blue diamonds, while the Crystal Creek jeep trail is not. If you want a more leisurely climb, swing left at the Burro Trail and use it and the Spruce Creek Road for your route (see our map).

For the short route continue westerly up the Crystal Creek road cut (obvious roadbed and cut through conifer forest) 3/4 mile to an obvious intersection with another roadcut (the upper route as marked on our HutSki map). Continue a few hundred feet up obvious roadbed to a point where you break out of timber and get a nice view of the bowls and peaks above. You can continue up the roadbed a short distance to the hut, but the blue diamonds indicate a more direct line to the hut from here and that's the best way.

We can lunch at Francie's Cabin.

Directions to trailhead:
Spruce Creek Trailhead for Francies Cabin
ELEVATION: 9,680 feet
HUTSKI.COM FREE MAP: Francie's Cabin
USGS 7.5 map: Breckenridge
GPS: 409 580 E, 43 65 818 N
HUT ACCESSED: Francie's Cabin
Drive Colorado Highway 9 to the ski town of Breckenridge. In Breckenridge drive to the intersection of Main Street (HWY 9) and South Park Avenue, and note your odometer mileage. Drive south out of Breckenridge on HWY 9, at 2.3 miles from Breckenridge take a right (west) on Spruce Creek Road, which drive about a mile (bear left at intersections) to a snowplow turnaround with limited parking. The trailhead is marked with Forest Service signs. Depending on snowplow whims, you may be able to drive to an upper trailhead 3/4 mile farther up the road at 10,385', 409 596 E, 43 65 806 N. Carpool to this trailhead and be prepared to car shuttle as parking is limited.

Hi all: Weather report from Dillon - it is warm! I'm not sure if we'll be snow shoeing OR hiking! :)

Please be prepared for both.

Also: on the subject of food + bevs - not aware that we actually have a budget for any of this - so if we could each pack individual lunches and bring a snack item and beverage (soda, wine, beer, etc) to share - that would be great!

See you all tomorrow!
