I work with the Asian American Studies Program at the University of
Maryland, College Park. We would like to invite you and your community
to view
Transcending, a documentary about Wat Misaka, a nisei
Japanese American collegiate basketball star who played during the
World War II era. Misaka led the University of Utah to national
championships in 1944 and 1947. In between those NIT and NCAA
championship seasons, he served as a translator for the Army in
occupied Japan. After the 1947 season, he was picked by the New York
Knickerbockers, however, in the post-WWII
times of racial adversity, Misaka was dropped from the team after 3
games.
Come join us in learning his story of his love for basketball, war-time history, and breaking racial boundaries on

Doors open at 6:00PM and the movie starts at 6:30PM. Admission is
FREE and
open to anyone and everyone! The audience will have a chance to ask questions of Wat Misaka, who will be present during and after the event.
