Too much wasted space?

I think Belle is using definitely too much space for empty-cool-design areas, sacrificing space for stuff that really matters. A nice back-end is a must nowadays, but it's still a back-end, so first of all should be productive, in my opinion, productivity should be over design on a back-end.

Here's a basic mock-up of the Generic Property window, removing those 50-60 px of white-wasted-space between each row. I hope you consider it:

+1.  There are a lot of places like this which need some design input.

I do agree that the vertical space is to much.
In situations like these it is often the small details that complete the design. I guess that it is controlled from a central CSS so it should be able to fix / experiment with before the final release.

Also - I noticed another place today while testing the BETA was the doctype editor (umbraco/#/settings/framed/%252Fumbraco%252Fsettings%252FeditNodeTypeNew.aspx)

- It is very difficult to see that "Choose..." is a button or a link that the user can use.
- The Allowed Templates legend is the only thing spanning the entire page -  would make sense to use the same with as the rest of the elements
- In the "Generic properties" tab it is very difficult to seperate the different parts of the page, all of the text is the same color and it is hard to know where to click

Im a big fan of the "text as UI" conventions being used these days - but as the case of vertical spacing - I think every screen should have a review.

Keep up the great work!

Best Thomas

I agree, too much empty space. Maybe take a leaf out of Google's book and have a "display density" setting where you can select between comfy, cost and compact.

+2 for me on this one. The fact that I now have to scroll on my relatively high resolution screen seems to be a step backwards when there's absolutely no reason for this. Joao's mockup is great, there's still lots of white space, not cramped at all but all items visible without scrolling.

I would love to see this changed before release. Or if UX designers are stuck on having it "their way", enable a user customizable css file that doesn't get overwritten in upgrades so that we can easily make these kinds of optimizations to our (and our clients) environments to help improve their productivity.

Agree on the wasted space - we've updated it. Details here:
