Are there any plans for working on Canvas within the Belle project?

Not to keep harping on about Sitecore, but their page editor is a good way to sell to potential editors. (admittedly the desktop is awful, but you can do so much in the page editor that you may never need to show it to your editors)

Just putting ideas out there...

Our research around Canvas (and feedback around various forms of 'in place editing') is that it works best in a sales/demo situation, but not that well in practice (where not all content elements are visible to the editor). It's still a really interesting area to explore in the future, but it isn't a part of Belle initially (in fact "Canvas" was turned off by default in 4.10).

In the Umbraco development mailinggroup there is a discussion about an alternative created by Darren Ferguson

Maybe this can be the next (working) version of Canvas

I firmly believe there will be a future for the canvas or in page style editing. I too have felt the real world implimentation means it sells better than it works..... BUT there is definitely too much visual disconnect between content and the finnished page for many content editors. It's true users become familiar with the editing environment they are given. After initial loadingh of site content The MAIN thing any client does is enter copy and images. I feel these areas have a very long way to go (in any CMS) to be a pleasing user experience. Layouts are getting more complex in subltle ways as data driven content mixes with rich editable content across multiple columns. Please dont sideline this idea

@Maak Bow: i cannot agree more! The visual disconnection between backend/content tree and frontend is a huge problem on big and deep sites.

Some time ago i made a feature request, but unfortunately it got no attention, please see http://issues.umbraco.org/issue/U4-2264 and http://issues.umbraco.org/issue/U4-793

For inspiration: My editors love N2 CMS as it has a very nice solution for this problem. Pleas see on http://demo.n2cms.com/n2/ ( login with admin / changeme )

I was originally against Canvas as a concept since most editors seem pretty happy with editing within the Umbraco back end (and this satisfaction will be even higher with Belle), however, having worked with Kentico and Sitecore a lot recently, I would like to see Canvas editing brought back to life in Umbraco. Sitecore have a simple solution for editing fields which aren't visible on the page, you can click a button to open a dialog with those fields without losing what you've been editing in the current page.

Just my tuppence.
