Les Oolaganathan Soobramoney...@durban.gov.za Chief Water Quality Officer Receiving Environment, covers the entire Metro area. He has teams on the ground for all the regions.
Just for your information the high E.coli counts above the Umbilo Treatment Works, the Tracing team found a pump station that was overflowing in the Paradise Valley area. There was a problem with the rising main as it was full of sand thus leading to challenges with the pumping performance. M&E attended to the issue and the pump station is now working well at the moment. They will also monitor the situation for a while to make sure there are no other issues.
Regards
SM

Despite the considerable challenges faced by the mobile crane accessing the standby gen-set resting plinth, this aspect of the assignment was completed by early afternoon today.
The appointed contractor has commenced with the trench excavations tying-up with the internal subterranean cable duct to the motor control centre. They have informed that their contracting Master Electrician will be available on Friday to effect the final electrical connections and initiate the commissioning countdown.
I have diarized to communicate an update bulletin, close of business Friday 02/10.

Pursuant to my 30/09 update bulletin:
To promote cost savings, the Council free issued power cabling to the contractor responsible for installing/commissioning the standby gen-set (this was the cabling that interconnected the change-over panel with the standby gen-set and the MCC at the location from which it was transferred). Matching this cabling with the Umbilo WWTW (West) load has necessitated aggregating the cable, thereby adding another layer of difficulty for the contractor to address. These terminations will be finalized tomorrow.
I will also be engaging with the contractor tomorrow to discuss safety-related misgivings irt the change-over panel (that accompanied the standby gen-set) that were raised today by the gen-set specialist sub-contractor. A status update will follow.

Standby Gen-Set Update Bulletin:
The power cable bundles were prepared and readied for termination when the utility power was deactivated at 11h45 today.
The terminations were completed and the utility power restored at 19h00.
Disappointingly, the changeover panel utility mains circuit would not latch in. Despite extensive troubleshooting efforts, it is evident that there is an electronics fault and that selected components will require replacement.
The MCC will be restored to pre: change-over panel status and the assignment reassessed on Monday.

Standby Gen-Set Update Bulletin:
The source of the gen-set automation malfunction has been traced to a faulty circuit-breaker interlock latching mechanism.
A SO has been advertised for the circuit-break to be removed, stripped and a budget estimate to repair/replace. This will inform what SCM process M&E is to follow to repair/replace, install, and commission. Ideally, it would be preferable to combine both processes but the cost is an unknown right now.
The best-case scenario is for the gen-set to be introduced to active service by October-end. Worst case scenario, mid-November.

Standby Gen-Set Update Bulletin:
An order number is still awaited to resolve the fault preventing the commissioning of the gen-set. As a consequence, I project that the gen-set will be introduced to operations, November-end latest, when load-shedding is reported to be re-commencing.
In spite of the Section 36 report referencing the provision of two new standby gen-sets and replacement of the aerator motor/gearbox modules still being on the on the authorization trail, the tender documents have been finalized and can be launched upon receipt of final approvals.
