The LUG's 27th anniversary is coming up. The first meeting [0] was
Oct 6, 1997.

For a number of years, we've done a pizza+beer+geektalk celebration at
Sorrento of Arbutus [1] at around the date in question.

Anyone have objections to a repeat performance? Any objection to Sun
Oct 6, 2024, 1pm, at Sorrento of Arbutus[2]? If that's bad, feel free
to suggest alternate weekend dates[3] or locations [4]. Please send
alternate suggestions to me by 2024-09-28 @2359 Eastern. Please let's
not clutter up the list itself with a long thread on this. If there
is not general consent, we'll do an online poll after that point with
the dates and/or locations people suggest.

Note that this event is equally for *everyone* in the LUG. Whether
you're a current student, former student, or someone who was never a
student but just likes the LUG, you are invited and welcome! The
person organizing this isn't a current student, either. :)

Apologies for the late start in planning this.

- Morty

[0] Well, first successful meeting. If anyone wants to hear that
story, just ask!

Oh, and the day before, Oct 5, is also a significant date in the
history of the linux kernel (0.02 released on Oct 5, 1991) as well
as slashdot (went live on Oct 5, 1997 -- the day before our first
successful meeting.)

[1] There are two Sorrentos. This is the one in Arbutus, on East
Drive, *not* the one in Catonsville.

[2] Some folks are certain to object. That's fine. I'm not a big fan
of Sorrento, either. We've been going with it because it's open
on Sunday, accessible to wheelchairs, close to UMBC, serves group
food, can accomodate a group of 10+ people, and accepts our
reservations.

[3] We want to be friendly to alumni who work. So no weekdays or
weeknights, please.

[4] I'm not a fan of Sorrento. Please feel free to offer up
alternatives that meet the requirements. Requirements:

(a) Close enough to UMBC for students without cars to walk or get
rides.

(b) Open on Sunday from about 1p to about 3p.

(c) Serves group foods (pizza, wings, etc.)

(d) Serves beer

(e) Large open space that can seat 10 people or so

(f) Handicap accessible

(g) Can do a reservation. Technically, Sorrento no longer does
reservations, but they make an exception for us.

Sounds good... I've been trying to make one of these for years and glad to catch this notice before it was too late.  I put it on my calendar and will strive to go to downtown Arbutus directly from Sunday services.  Thanks Morty for keeping this Linux User Group experience alive!  Bernie
