On the list of things to bring a > less than 5" mason's trowel is
listed, but on the TSA prohibited items website it says no tools over
7" are allowed. Also, we're not supposed to use checked baggage, so I
was wondering if these trowels are okay to bring on a plane, or if
there will be a place we can buy them once we get to Belize?

Hey Jen,

You are allowed to check a bag, the only restriction is the weight and number.  If you go over 50lbs then it costs $50 or if you have two bags then its an extra $50 as well.  I would highly recommend checking a bag it is a long trip and we want you to feel prepared.  Now about the trowel one of the senior staffers looked at the TSA website and found that you actually can have a 5" trowel in your carry on  (http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm#7however, I think it would be a good idea to put it in your checked luggage so no one in security freaks out :).  If there is anything else about your situation that would help us answer the question better let us know!

Thanks- I was concerned because all together the trowel is technically
over 7", with the handle and all, so it's probably subject to
interpretation. I tend to pack light and would prefer not to check any
luggage but perhaps I will check a small bag just for this purpose.
