Subject: [PLANETARY] Space Sciences Outreach - Fall events!
To: <PLAN...@listserv.umd.edu>

Hello space sciences and related STEM communities!

In May, we launched the Space Sciences Outreach Cooperative (SSOC) to fill in gaps in STEM education in PG County and the greater DC area. UMD has the strongest and most space-related science opportunities of all the universities in the DMV, and it's time to let everyone know! We are a group of graduate students, undergrads, faculty, and staff here at UMD but we work independently from any department - we have collaborated with departments, research groups, and the Observatory in the past - and look forward to collaborating again.
  • Are you interested in talking about your research at Nerd Nite or Astronomy on Tap downtown?
  • Have you considered going to a nearby grade school classroom to talk about careers in STEM?
  • Do you have an idea for a long-term project for a high school class?
  • Do you want to staff a telescope for an off-campus observing night?
  • Maybe you aren't ready (or don't want) to develop your own activity, but you'd have fun distributing some NASA stickers and high-fives at a local fair for a few hours?
The Space Sciences Outreach Cooperative does all these things and more. Different events have varying time commitments - so whatever you can fit into your schedule, we would love to have you. 2023-2024 is an exciting year, with both an annular and total eclipse partially visible from UMD in the fall and spring respectively. If you've ever wanted to give outreach a try, now is a great time!

If you're interested in any kind of outreach and education, please fill out this form by Friday, September 15.

Feel free to send this to any other lists (or individuals) who might be interested - we would especially love to find engineers and atmospheric scientists who may be interested. We would also love to see more faculty and staff get involved, as it would help ensure that SSOC maintains a presence independent of the organizers and their timelines at UMD. If you have any questions, feel free to reach us at spaceo...@umd.edu.

Thank you so much, and we look forward to meeting you!
