Just ahead of National Scrabble Day, Mattel unveiled Scrabble Together this week adding a second side to the classic Scrabble gameboard to make "gameplay more accessible for anyone who finds word games intimidating," the company said in a news release.
The company said the double-sided board allows fans to "pick and choose their gameplay mode, so everyone can have fun with Scrabble." It is the first time in its 75-year history that Scrabble has made such a significant change to its gameboard, according to Mattel.
Scrabble Together allows players to work as a team to complete goal cards at their chosen challenge level, with helper cards to aid players throughout the game, according to Mattel. The game is also designed to be quicker with simple scoring, the company said.
Mattel says new research has "delved into UK adult's love for board games" and found that 51% of board game players use it as a way of unplugging from social media, while 65% believe playing board games helps them switch off.

Mattel has unveiled a double-sided board that features both the classic word-building game and Scrabble Together, a new rendition designed to be accessible "for anyone who finds word games intimidating."
This new version, which is now available across Europe, is advertised as being more team-oriented and quicker to play. The update marks the first significant change to Scrabble's board in more than 75 years, Mattel said Tuesday.
"We want to ensure the game continues to be inclusive for all players," Ray Adler, vice president and global head of games at Mattel said in a prepared statement, noting that consumers will still be able to choose between the classic game and new version.
Seeking to expand their reach, toy companies have rolled out alternative or simplified ways to play board games for years, ranging from "junior" editions made for younger children to multiple sets of instructions that players can opt into for increasing difficulty.
Scrabble Together is marketed toward players of all ages. Jim Silver, a toy-industry expert and CEO of review site TTPM, said the double-sided board is a smart approach because it allows players to switch from one mode to another as they wish.
Mattel's announcement was also accompanied by a survey that offered a glimpse into some of the ways British consumers have previously tackled classic Scrabble. London-based market researcher Opinion Matters found that 75% of U.K. adults aged 25 to 34 have searched a word when playing the board-and-tile game to check if it's real. And almost half (49%) reported trying to make up a new word in hopes of winning.
"Mattel and Hasbro have worked separately to develop different versions of Scrabble every year," Silver said. As a result, some versions are only available in certain countries, creating an "interesting dynamic" for avid fans of the game, he added.
Scrabble's origins date back to 1931, when American architect Alfred Mosher Butts invented the game's forerunner. Scrabble's original name was "Lexiko," according to a Mattel factsheet, and before officially getting the Scrabble title and trademark in 1948, Butts' creation was also called "Criss-Crosswords," "It" and "Alph."
Today, Scrabble is produced in 28 different languages. More than 165 million games have been sold in 120 countries around the world since 1948, according to Mattel, with an average of 1.5 million games sold globally each year.

I like playing but haven't played in a few years. When my daughter moved out I didn't have anybody to play games with anymore. Now that my niece is 10 and loves to play games I enjoy playing with her. Thank you :)
I enjoy playing scrabble. I think the games usually take about an hour or more. I use to play with my family when I had this board game. I no longer have one, due to the moves and just getting married, starting our own board game collection!Thanks
There are 217 comments on my Scrabble post. All of you hate Scrabble GO. The staid old EA Scrabble app has a following, and, at least as far your comments reveal, no one in that following likes the new, busy, ugly Scrabble GO app from Scopely.
The owners of Scrabble (Hasbro in the US and Canada, Mattel elsewhere) want to make more money. The previous EA Scrabble app is either free with ads, or a one-time purchase of about $10. They want more.
The deal with Scopely to create the new and abominable Scrabble GO was designed to increase revenue. Scrabble GO is rife with the gamification strategies that generate ongoing revenues, such as bugging you to get your friends on it and to make in-app purchases of gems and the like to get to the next level.

Scrabble Go is a million times better. More contact with other players. More shorter word games. Much more user friendly. Scrabble EA was tired and tedious. Sorry but your review gets it all wrong. I say this as a 57 year old lifelong Scrabble addict.
