4. Conference: "New Media/Alternative Politics: Communication Technologies and Political Change in the Middle East and Africa", CRASSH, Cambridge, 14 - 16 October 2010
The spread of digital technologies in the Middle East and Africa has generated the view that 'new media' open up political spaces for dissent, activism and emancipation. This conference offers an opportunity to critically reassess these assumptions. "New media, alternative politics" will bring together researchers, academics, activists, journalists and policy makers to discuss whether and how new media empower an alternative politics and mobilise political change.

5. Shahnama Millennium Conference: "Firdausi: The Next Thousand Years", Cambridge, 13-15 December 2010
Firdausi's Shahnama, completed 1000 years ago (on 8 March 1010), is variously defined as the 'encyclopaedia of Iranian culture', or the symbol of the Iranian nation; Firdausi's role in the formation of the Persian literary language and literary culture in general is similar to that of Shakespeare in the English-speaking world, or Pushkin for the Russians, who consider him 'our all'. It is clearly not simply its size that is the secret of the Shahnama's eternal glory and success.
The participants of the conference will offer their vision of the development of the Shahnama studies in different directions: pre-Islamic mythology, literary aspects, early Islamic historiography, codicology and illustrated book art, its role and influence on the literatures of the Persianate world (Mughal India, Ottoman Turkey, Caucasus) and its perception in Iran throughout the centuries until nowadays.

8. Call for Papers on "Religious Networks in Asia and Beyond" in Encounters: International Journal for the Study of Culture and Society
Guest editor Peter van der Veer, Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity.
While there has been some attention in the literature to Islamic Da'wa and Christian Evangelicalism there has not been enough work that goes beyond the study of a particular religion to develop comparative perspectives on religious globalization. This special number of Encounters will examine the expansion of religious connectivity and communication in Asia.
Papers can be written from a variety of perspectives, but should take Asia (including West-Asia or the Middle East) as their geographical starting point, even when the religious movements under study are globally organized with nodal points in Europe or the USA.
We are also open to reviewing papers focusing on state policies concerning proselytizing and the debate about religious freedom. Please submit your paper (5,000 to 10,000 words) electronically in MS Word format to
vande...@mmg.mpg.de by April 15, 2011. For further information on the Call for Papers see:
