Can someone explain to me how to decode ADS-B (mode S)
I have one of the cheap "tv" receivers coming in the post shortly and it has an RTL2832U chip  and Elonics E4000 tuner
I want to use my Windows computer with this to receive ADS-B and Acars  Pocsag and some other data modes but have no idea which programs I will need or how to link them to work together

Lew,

You may have problems with ADS-B as the E4000 has a coverage gap around the
ADS-B frequency (1090 MHz). You mat also need a rather fast PC. The
receivers often used have hardware decoding:

microADSB - Euro 73

The Mode-S Beast - Euro 292

I've got a decent computer so that shouldnt be a problem
I'm hoping the reciever won't have a gap there but a bit higher
Assuming it does receive on 1090Mhz  any ideas how to decode Mode-S (ads-b) using this?

There's a waveform video here:

and a PDF description with GNU Radio here:

I would be interested in knowing what PC speed is actually required, as most
of the implementations seem to use hardware.

I hope that helps.

Cheers,
David

Hi,
I'm using RTL based Dongle (E4000 + RTL2832) to receive ADS-B (using gr-air-modes by Nick Foster)
it works also if performances are not excellent. Future improvements are on the way,  I think.
For example, SM5BSZ "discovered" a way to disable AGC... that could help!

I did myself some script to perform some exporting from the DB after recording is finished, I'm pretty satisfied for now.
It is just 20€ receiver!

Feel free to contact me for any further info.
Cheers,

Fabio

That's good new, Fabio, thanks for letting us know. Unfortunately, on my
E4000 dongle (FCD) the coverage gap includes the 1090 MHz ADS-B frequency.
I've got a couple of low-cost ones coming from China, so maybe I can test
those (at least if that gr-air-modes extension runs under WIndows....).

I now have my RTL based Dongle
It receives from 52Mhz - 2199Mhz with a gap of 1101 to 1270Mhz

I have gr-air-modes set up in Ubunto in a virtual box on my Windows computer and it works perfectly
I can view planes in Google Earth

However I cannot get it to connect to the virtual radar server
and it connect to Planeplotter

I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong

Any clues?

Or do I HAVE to have the linux server on a different computer and not use Virtualbox
