Bank raid bid disables 999 phones

Cables cut during a failed bank raid in Gloucestershire have disabled
telephone systems, including 999 services.

People needing emergency help in Wotton-under-Edge are advised to go to
the town's police station where crews are on standby.

It is believed that burglars cut wires to the telephone exchange in the
early hours to knock out the alarm system at Lloyds TSB bank in Long
Street.

Their attempt to remove a cash machine failed and they escaped
empty-handed.
