Hey guys.

Let's get a subdomain in place for you all and a CMS (content
management system) in place for you all to get moving. We can put up
a forum for you all there too and get it running so the mailing list
discussion can return to docs type things.

What do you think?

Also, passing on some info from gettinther:

Gettinther said:
> There's one thing I would like to see in the mag. Even if small, I'd like to see something about "what others do right". A bit like a thumbs up for the other distros. I get so tired of hearing "mine's better than yours". Why not give credit where credit is due? I would be a way to show the spirit of FOSS.

Just an idea he had that I needed to pass on here. So, let's use this
mailing list thread to toss out ideas for a subdomain:

mag.unity-linux.org or something similar.

Let's use this thread to pick out a content management system and/or
forum...and let's get it implemented.

If you'd like to hear my suggestions, I can do that for ya ;) Just
ask me.

I think we can get a MyBB bulletin board up with a portal function.
To see what I mean, look at http://forum.unity-linux.org/portal.php

It's built in and only requires that we install one thing...the
bulletin board :)

We can always jump off and install a new front page keeping the forum :)

I like that, I was wondering if there was a portal page.

There's also a ProPortal, which gets you greater functionality.

Can we revert proPortal to a standard forum if they elect to go with
some other CMS for main page?

Yeah, that's not a problem-- just change the portal.php to redirect to index.php.

Cool, looks like we got something figured out.

I'm waiting on Site5 to fix our subdomain problem and then we'll launch on this.

yep lets go for it other wise it won't get done. One thing I would
like is that the mag stays totally independent of the Unity Distro I
don't want a repeat of the PCLos shenanigans.
I like Gettinther suggestion about giving other Distro's a mention as
well as all the branches having some input into the Unity mag.
I'm uploading (files section) a rough and I mean rough layout based on
The BSD mag as I like the look of it.

I would encourage recruiting from outside the dev group as much as possible, so you are able to maintain your semi-detatched state for the mag.  The more Unity devs you have, the more unintentionally tied into Unity itself you will be.  Not that having some of the devs there is a bad thing, but in order to have the level of independence you seek, having the majority of your crew NOT be Unity devs would be a good idea...

...just my 2 cents... hope it makes change...

I think that's just due to general lack of activity on everybody's part.  Remember the huge influx at first announcement?  They are all still around, just waiting to hear from us.  And most probably rely solely on the forums to hear from us, while we habitually lean toward the ML... so maybe WE just need to be more vocal over there and the liveliness of the forums will most likely increase.

I have no objection for it to be tied to unity, it should be are it really wouldn't be Unity Linux Magazine. The thing that was my objection at PCLOS was the censorship they were imposing on the Magazine were we would have to get everything approved by Texster.

Now I have no objection talking about other distro's but I wouldn't want to do it all the time. I believe this should be about Unity and it's derivatives, not that others might not be good but others have their own mag or newsletter. :)  I would like to see the mag site look like all the Unity sites with the same theme etc.

These are just some of my thoughts. :)

What did it for me is that we had a magazine staff and during the
split, they didn't respect the staff at all. The staff had an editor
in place and they just threw out the editor without asking or taking a
vote of the magazine members.

THAT pissed me off. No one has the right to come in like gangbusters
on a project that is community run and do that.

I can guarantee you it won't happen EVER in Unity.

BTW, I'm beginning installs today for mag.unity-linux.org ;)

Don't get me wrong about being tied to Unity, all for it but, the mag
and it's contents
should be an independent community effort of Unity and Branches. For
one simple reason that some articles we may receive
might be controversial but reflect a group of people. Do we censor
there views or publish with independence?

Fullcirclemag is independent of Ubuntu just as an example (they have
not published anything controversial but, who knows).

One more file in the files section for input and feed back

Ok everyone...the website is now ONLINE. Please register and I'll
hand over the reigns to you.

Remember that if you don't know how to do something, you can always
hit up kdulcimer or myself and we'll be able to tell you how. Though,
the MyBB website documentation IS PRETTY AWESOME...so please read up
on it.

http://mag.unity-linux.org

When you visit the above link, you'll be on the portal page. We can
move the boxes around and increase/decrease their size as you deem
neccessary.

The forum can be reached by adding /index.php to the above URL.

I've added in quite a few unique themes I think you all might like.
You can select different themes with the theme switcher in the bottom
right hand corner of the screen. When you switch themes, please note
it will redirect you to the forum...make sure you then go back to the
portal by removing /index.php on the URL so you can see what the
portal page looks like because it will be what your guests see first.

I've added in a Downloads Manager. We can integrate it in when you
choose a theme. If you want to see what it looks like, just look
here: http://mag.unity-linux.org/downloads.php

Let me know which themes you guys like and please, start recruiting!

I understand and all, but if a controversial article came in and if I were the editor I would want to find out what is going on first and may not publish it. There would be some censorship as most everything has some.

I'm not sure how much longer Full Circle could claim to be Ubuntu centric if they posted some against it. It can be a delicate balancing act at times as to want goes to far.

Two things. Can we replace the myBB with Unity Linux Magazine? What theme is default for unity myBB right now?

I will have to do some homework and read about myBB :)

Yes, that can be done.

Novus Coffee

Would you like for me to install some themes? If so, create an issue on the issue tracker and list which themes you would like to have installed. You can switch themes by using the switcher in the lower right hand area of the forum.

The themes I picked will remain default 'as is' until we choose one.
After that, either Kdulcimer or I can alter the one you choose...so
yes, it can be done...but not until we decide on one :)

For more themes, just head over to http://mods.mybboard.net/themes

Kdulcimer really has picked out the best themes from there however so
If it were me, I'd just have him install his group.
