Hi all,

I afarid I am going to have to back out right now. I am not able to give the magazine project the time it deserves and next month I'll have even less time so I decided to back out. I am sorry if this makes anyone upset, the magazine should have the proper time given it and I can't do that right now.

I still would like to proofread though when we get to that stage.

Since Doug has decided to not be the editor of our fledgling mag does
anyone else fancy taking on the role of editor. I have enough trouble
with doing the layout let alone being editor besides I know nothing
about being an editor.

I can't. Once I sort out the docs team and do some other things
through my term, my eye will be on helping package management and then
my own branch.

I also made a task for this, so we won't forget it:

keep the window open on this one, I'm sure a good editor will fall in your
lap. besides, it will be a short while before an editor is necessary...
unless you guys plan to be ready by tomorrow... :P

I'm considering stepping away from docs work and just doing the
magazine and some other random stuff.

Me thinks a recruiting thread should be started on the forums...

I really hope you guys start back on the magazine. I've always been a reader of the pclos mag, and the last couple of issues have really began to bore me and put me off as far as the nonsensical bloat of information that is starting to be packed into it.

I wonder how their remaster community is holding up... been a while since I checked in on that.

If we are going to start the magazine, would it be possible to "show
good stuff from others". I think it would be nice not to be too "one
sided"

there could be a section called "Linux Highlights" that covers other amazing things happening in the world of linux in general...

just a thought :P

Brainstorming...here are my ideas:

1. LiveCD - How we develop it, how others can contribute, how others can use it.
2. MirrorMon - Our new tool to monitor mirror status (Paul created it)
3. Smart Development and how Unity contributes upstream through
different devs (david comes to mind)
4. Interveiw Proyvind from #unitylinux who is a Mandriva developer to
talk about how Unity is giving back to upstream projects (he's rpm5)
5. 64bit Unity
6. State of Internationalization in Unity
7. Feature a Team - pick one team on Unity and feature it and all the
members and the resources attached to it.
8. Feature a Dev - bio on a developer

BTW, if anyone needs a website setup for the magazine, just holler...I
can get one setup in a few minutes ;)

Slight correct. I did not create it. This is a project that exists out there for exactly our purposes. All I did (with Deven't help by the way) is make it work within our Unity's website. Also, I added the new mapping feature to it.

Another idea is to talk about smart-utils. We (David and gettinther) truly created that one from scratch :-)

Paul.

Paul, for those of us that know nothing about smart-utils, could you
give us a brief 'here's what it is' in case magazine guys are
scribbling notes to follow up on?

Sure,

Smart, as the name implies, is a pretty intelligent package manager. One of its features is the ability to automatically use mirrors to download packages (and metadata) from the location with the highest "score". The simplest way to explain "scores" is that a mirror whith faster download times would have a higher score than a mirror that is slower or non-responsive altogether. Of course, the assumption here is that Smart must be told what are the possible mirror choices. That's where smart-utils comes in. This package provides two features:
  1. through the smart-setup command, the user is presented a graphical (as in X or curses, depending on your current environment) dialog asking for selection of two mirrors that the user would like smart to use. This is the interactive approach and allows users to pick any mirrors from the list of all possibilities.
  2. through the smart-setup-auto command, the tool automatically identifies the users geographic location (based on locale) and then randomly selects two mirrors from the available mirrors in that geographic location. Currently, the geographic locations are distinguished as Oceania&Pacific and America in one group and Europe, Asia, Africa in another group. Of course, as the number of available mirrors grows over time, the granularity of this automatic selection process can be improved.
The bottom line is that smart-utils allows for much faster access to Unity repos while distributing the load so that no single repo is overtaxed.

Those are good ideas. I was think more of an itro to unity by highlighting the devs and others in the very first issue I just haven't been with it lately, I got an infection an it makes me feel bad most of the time.

What I would like to know is the wallpaper for the final because I want to use it for the cover to tie the mag with unity. Of course we need a graphics person, a layout person and someone that can come up with better interview questions then I could. :)

Yep still around Doug.
Right if you guy's are serious about getting a mag together then you
need to get a mag team together first.

You need:
Editor
Graphics
layout (me)
proof readers
Html guy (for web version)

Devnet put forward some good ideas to get started.
The first things I would need are transparent background .png logo's
etc for heading and stuff like that. So I would need to get together
with whom ever is doing the graphics and sort these things out. A
magazine can be time intensive so you need a team dedicated to doing a
mag and not on to much other stuff with Unity if that's possible.

If we are to get the magazine going maybe it would be a good idea have
a look at this bit of kit for the magazine team:
http://status.net/products/product-features-list
which has a file file sharing feature that might come in handy
