Problems with UKWEBGROUP

Is anyone else having problems with UKWEBGROUP? (www.ukwebgroup.com)

I have used them for a umber of months for web hosting and initially
they were very responsive. Now, howeverm they are truly awful.

They have not responded to any emails I have sent them for weeks.
Their web contact form doesn't work. I bought a new hosting package
two weeks ago and nothing has happened yet.

Last week all their websites went offline early in the morning for a
few hours. Not just mine, but even their main sites. They were up
again in the morning - but with no explanation or anything.

I have actually shifted all my sites away from them now (thankfully
the registration was with a different provider so I just pointed the
nameservers elsewhere) but I still want my money back for the hosting
I never got set up. I have found no wayof contacting them and am now
about to resort to going to my credit card company.

I also noticed on sitepoint they are trying to sell their business as
they are apparently moving to Australia. So that may well be the cause
of the issues.

Anyone else have any problems? Or any ideas how to contact them?

Ian

Ian, you are not alone, my site went down about 5 days ago.....and
have heard nothing back from ukwebgroup....have emailed all the
various emails, support etc and tried calling them.......but to no
availl...I've been with them for 2 years..not sure whats going
on.......you're the only post I've found on the web concerning this
issue......let's hope they at least get in touch.....worst case
scenario..they've vanished!!! I noticed my last payments were taken by
the Australian webgroup company....so maybe they have moved.

I'm also having problems with UK:Web - one of my website's been down
since Saturday. It seems they didn't renew my domain name registration
at the beginning of December despite requesting and accepting my money
for it! I've been with them for 3 years! and I have also tried to use
the support ticket system, and sent loads if emails to no avail.

The domain registrar they use is Heart Internet, so I presume they are
a reseller for Heart Internet.

As far as I can tell the last activity from ukwebgroup was the "early
christmas gift" email from Lee Curtis on 24/11/2007. The last news
post was nearly a year ago on 02/02/2007, similar on their UK:Web blog
- 05/02/2007, and a little more recent on their Mastery blog on
22/07/2007. The UK:Web system status is updated regularly, but I don't
think this reflects activity from UK:Web as it seems actually to be
the Heart Internet system status. So I get the impression that maybe
the UK Web Group is a one man band, and he's lost he's mojo.

So IanBrodie, had you registered your domain name with a different
company or did you contact Heart Internet? Also out of interest which
hosting company have you switched to? I'm struggling to find one with
such amazing prices that UK:Web offers! I guess in the end you get
what you pay for!

Lets hope Lee gets his act together fast or at least hope new
customers do some research and find these posts before placing more
orders.

I'm also having problems with UKWEBGROUP. Like for dave008, they
haven't renewed my domain despite taking my money for it. I received a
mail from Nominet, the registry for .uk domain names informing me that
it hasn't been renewed.

Like other forum users, I have tried getting in touch with them (about
something else) since the beginning of January but haven't heard from
them.

I did a bit of digging and the current website looks decidedly dodgy :
some links are redirecting to the old address (ukwebhosting.co.uk,
which is now Dataflame, who have told me they have nothing to do with
UK:WEB), some don't work at all. On one site there are four hosting
packages available, on another only three, etc. These discrepancies do
not inspire me with confidence.

Since the registrar is Heart Internet, I got in touch with them and
they told me that ukwebgroup was one of their clients (I guess
therefore a reseller). I wanted to transfer the domain to them since
its IPSTAG (registrar tag on Nominet listed here) is already
HEARTINTERNET, but they told me they could only do that if ukwebgroup
agreed to it. If they don't and I doubt they would, another solution
would be to change the IPSTAG of the domain to another registrar
(which I believe you can do from the domain control panel), open an
account with them, transfer the domain and get them to renew it.

So the search is on for a new domain and hosting provider...

As an aside, and something of a mantra for me, DO NOT deal* with any
web site that does not give a bricks & mortar address for contact.

Obviously this is no guarantee, but in my book anyone who isn't
prepared to give a real world postal address is either up to
something, or will disappear when the chips are down.

Not having any history with this 'company' I don't know if the site
ever had real contact details available.

* Deal, as in 'give financial details to'.

I've got the same problem.

They took my money for my hosting package renewal but haven't actually
renewed it and it has expired.

I have been e-mailing them for weeks on all contacts - no response.
When I used their support about a year ago it was good so was
surprised to get no response this time.

I'm am going to move my site elsewhere and dispute the charge with my
credit card company.

This 'company' does have a postal address as well as a phone number.

Just thought I would give an update. Heart Internet has delivered and
transferred my domain to themselves, and I have been able to renew it.
But beware, whereas UK:WEB was giving you unlimited mailboxes, Heart
Internet makes you pay £8.99 a year for one mailbox. So I'm using
email forwarding instead, which is free. Not really a problem for
receiving mail but is to send it.
I just need to have my website rehosted now...

Not listed on the 'hosting' site, you have to go dig for it on the
parent site, and the phone number isn't manned, messages only - unless
you're a 'VIP' customer of course....

Admittedly

I went with 5quidhost.co.uk and everything is back to normal since
yesterday, including the mailbox. They look like they know what
they're doing.

Update from me:

Since it was my domain that was the problem and my hosting was still
working fine (I could access it by ip), I thought it would be a simple
job of renewing my domain name, and then I'd be able to use the years
worth of hosting I just paid UK:Web for. I thought the easiest way to
do it would be through Heart Internet since they were already the
registrar.

They swapped it over no problems, and renewed it for me at a
reasonable price, but they didn't warn me that in the process they
would have to delete my hosting account at UK:Web. So that's a bummer.

I took a look at 5quidhost after you mentioned it LucieB. They're
pretty cheap but not quite as "too good to be true" as UK:Web ...and
they have a bricks and mortar address ...and they're a registered
company in the UK, so I'm giving them a go.

Their support seems excellent (at the moment), but I'm finding the
servers a little sluggish, so I'm going to keep looking around. Are
you finding them a little on the slow side too LucieB? I was thinking
maybe the paid for packages might be better.

I am in the same boat, I paid to re-register a domain back in November
only to find out yesterday it was not renewed, it expires today. I
have been on to Nominet who told me that heartinternet would re-
register it if I contact them, which I had already done from 2.30am
this morning. I have not been having any success, in fact I heard
nothing from 9am this morning. I am running about like a headless
chicken trying to get something done.

I have foun out that Lee was trying to sell the company in November at
Site Point. Any advice on what way to go would be appreciated.

Just to update on my problems, I have been in constant contact with
heart and now they control the domain, though may I advise anyone whi
is going down this route to create a back up of your site. Despite me
asking to keep the hosting with ukweb to see out the year and get
something else sorted, they changed all dns etc and I ened up not on
air. The quickest way round this was take a hosting package with heart
and since I had a recent backup uploaded this.

I spoke to Nominet who were extremly helpfull and told me there was no
imediate danger, you have 37 days grace after the domain expires to re
register it before it goes into a state of suspension when it will not
be live, so 97 days in total to sort things out. If all else fails
Nominet can do a registrar change for you, they charge £10 for this.

On a more sinister note I checked the whois on the last 3 .uk domains
I bought from UKwebgroup since it was taking some time to get nominest
certs, and to my horror they have not my name on them but have
WebWorld Holdings name and addresed to
PO BOX 4184
Copacabana
NSW
2251
AU
This is going to be a headache to get this rectified, My advice now is
have no more dealings with UKwebgroup and start moving the domains and
hosting now while you can.
