Hi All

I have looked through the historical posts about holiday arrangements
and it is causing a problem for us this year for the first time. Last
time Cosmo stayed with our neighbours, so all his normal arrangements
were in place and he gets on well with the neighbour's dogs and the
cats just evacuated for the two weeks. However things have changed
with the neighbours and they can no longer accommodate guests in any
form, dog or otherwise.

So I have been looking for home kennels and dog sitters, house sitters
and asking friends and family and am really stuck as nobody can stay
in our house for two weeks and I really cannot stretch to the enormous
amount the 'homesitting' firms want. There is a local home kennel but
she is booked up and there seems to be nowhere else local showing up.

Cosmo cannot stay in kennels and usually if we go anywhere, mum stays
with him at home to keep his routine as stable as possible and I use a
lady in the village who walks him during the week and helps out at
weekends.

One friend has offered him a home for the two weeks but last year when
we stayed with her for a night whilst there was a party at home, all
the new noises sent him barmy. Her routine is very different as well
and whilst she would look after him really well, I think it might be
as stressful for him as kennels and I could never go on holiday
worrying about him every minute, I would rather stay at home again.

We are near Maidstone in Kent so I cannot really lug him up the
country by several hundred miles so if anyone knows of anywhere I
would be really grateful for any suggestions. I am not looking for a
free home for him, just somewhere he will be looked after as he should
be. Thanks, Karen and Cosmo.

I sometimes take dogs into my own home. I have my own dogs so he
would have to be sociable. My website is www.vizslas.webs.com

Hi Karen

We take in dogs for holidays (we have a vizsla and a wire-haired
vizsla of our own) however we are in Hampshire, about 1 1/2 hours from
you. If you are stuck we would be happy to take in Cosmo when you go
away, assuming we have availability for when you are going away. We
charge £10 per night and he would stay in our house with our dogs. We
have 3 children to play with the dogs and we have a large 115ft garden
to play in as well as a local park and nearby river for walks. If
you are interested, let me know.

Kind regards

Rona

Hi Rona

Thank you for this. We are away from 3rd-17th September, he would
need to arrive on Friday 2nd as we have to be at the airport at 11am
on the Saturday but land about 5pm so all being well I would hope to
collect him that evening. There might be someone nearby I have to
give her a call today and you might not have capacity when we are away
but as you say it is not too far. I think if you have space, we would
need to arrange an overnight, just so he knows I will come back and
get him. Always worry he will think he has been rehomed, hence I
always have someone to stay with him at home.

Kind regards

Karen

Hi Karen

I don't know whether you meant to copy everyone - but I thought I would chip in!!!  Despite promising myself that I would never be the sort of owner who was reluctant to put her dog in kennels that's exactly what I am!!!  So by the time it came time for Fettle to stay somewhere, she was 2 and had never spent a night away from home - or a day away from me, and I was worried she would pine or think she had been re-homed.  And I definitely wasn't prepared to take her to regular kennels.

I managed to fine a home situation somewhat like Rona's (we do a Vizla exchange with another family & I also took her To The Manor Bourne run by Vicky Martin - what a fabulous place - just look at the Facebook photos).  I honestly don't think you need to worry.  Fettle adapted almost instantly and actually had a really great time (I was reassured by getting some photos of her sitting on Vicky's fathers lap in front of the fire on the first night).  I really think he will be even happier than if you have someone stay at home with him (he might be wondering 'what the heck have you done with my owner & why are you using her fridge you interloper?????")  Seriously, I know its a worry when you leave your ginger baby, but Rona is really experienced and I am sure you will just be dismayed by the fact that he doesn't seem to miss you much.
