Hi All,

Have you seen the new Breed Health Survey on the Hungarian Vizsla Club
site. It is very extensive and covers a lot of problems we are having
in the breed. I am going to fill it out for my four vizzies. It will
run alongside the survey conducted 11 years ago and comparisons can be
drawn from this.

I think it is really important to do these surveys from time to time,
especially as more people are coming into the breed. It is important
for us to be aware of the things that are affecting our dogs and we
cannot know unless a survey is done.

Please, if you feel able to fill out this survey, will you go to the
HVC site and go onto the Latest News/Noticeboard and either download a
form or you can do it on the computer and email it. It will be hugely
useful and much appreciated.

Also, any information that you give about your dog/s is completely
confidential and you don't have to give your name unless you want to
so the form can be filled out anonymously.

Thanks

Lynn

I have just filled this out as I am very keen on helping to increase our knowledge of the various disorders Vizslak can suffer from.

It's a very comprehensive survey and fairly easy to fill in.  However, it does occur to me that it will take someone quite a while to compile all the results.  I would urge whoever is in charge to consider using an online survey service (such as SurveyMonkey).  It's really easy to set up - extremely easy for people to fill in, and makes compiling the results so much quicker and easier.  I would be very happy to help next time - I have used SurveyMonkey for my degree and also for doing surveys for my Cycling Club.

Great survey - and it's always a very helpful tool for breed enthusiasts.
The HVC New South Wales (Australia) conducted a breed health survey in 2009,
and the results for this can be seen on our website health page-
http://www.vizsla.org.au/breed_health_info.htm

The thing is (I think this works for the HVC UK too?) that it's equally
important for owners of *healthy* Vizslas to also complete the form - though
there is no mention in the preamble for the survey online of the criteria
for inclusion?

Our club felt it was very important to have perspective in the survey - so
those healthy dogs were important to give us an idea of population incidence
relative to the sample population of the survey.

Perhaps Sue can clarify, and also if it is open to international completion
too? Or just UK Vizslas? I'm guessing UK only, as there is no option that I
can see to include country of birth.

Thanks for any further information

Should have said... I can see there is facility to put 'no' for the various
conditions.

I am sure that most of you will be aware of Lynn's and my particular
interest in Polymyositis. However we should not lose sight of the fact
that there are plenty of other unpleasant things that our vizslas can
suffer from such as cancers, epilepsy, hip and eye problems and other
forms of auto immune diseases. Completing this survey will hopefully
give us a good idea where we stand as a breed in the general health
stakes, so I urge everyone to take part if at all possible.

As Lynn says there is no need to identify yourselves or your dog(s) by
name, only by sex and date of birth.

I would stress that this is a Kennel Club initiative and independent
of the Club or the Society who have I believe both agreed to publish
the findings when it is complete.

I haven’t seen any more about this on the list.

I received a private message from Sue Milson which said –

Ros

Thanks for your comments on chat group- sadly I am still having trouble with logging in -it keeps locking me out even though Cath tries to correct it- so at present I am a distant "viewer so to speak"

Any way -I totally agree with your comments about asking for healthy Vizslak to fill in survey -I had assumed "wrongly" that would be taken as read by people as the last one was. So I will ask Heather to correct that omission.

As far as the overseas Vizslak -that is also a very good suggestion as we are importing/exporting more freely now so data would be useful.

Could I ask you to spread the word to other countries you have access to re sites. Again no personal data is required ie -Name of dog or owner unless they wish to -but I would like them to write which country the survey comes from if that is acceptable. Again I could ask heather to place a box at the top of survey for this.

Many thanks  it is always good to receive positive comments -as some things you can be too close to and miss the obvious.

Best wishes

Sue

So, hopefully those who own/have owned healthy long lived Vizslas will take the time to complete the forms for each of those as well.

Ros

I was fully intending to fill out one for every one of my dogs, who are now of course no longer British-born, but Canadian and American. Thanks for getting that clarified Ros. I have already posted the survey once on my FB page (which is connected to many "foreign" Vizslas) but will now do so again with a proper call to action :-)

Hi Ros

I certainly read it that all Vizsla owners, healthy or not, should fill it in so have posted it on the NW Viz Wizz blog and Facebook group site, and I know that a good few have already filled it out.  I will continue to post it and remind people to spend a few mins doing it for the good of the breed we all love.  I have lots of overseas ‘Viz’ friends, so hopefully they will also take part.

Regards

Helgs
