My dear friends (in the UK especially) - are any of you NDTR
tattooers? Or do you know of anyone who is, who might be prepared to
advise me? I am being given an ear clamp to do my pups' tattoos with
and would love to get some tips from someone with experience. I'd hate
to do this wrong! Need to know if there's anything I can practise on
(piece of leather?) and if there is any benefit to inking after
clamping vs. applying ink to the needles (which I know one lady in
Canada does)? I was never present for my boys' ear tattoos and the
Canadians mostly use tattoo pens, which forces you to tattoo the groin
on a conscious dog, and I just much prefer the ear tattoos. If you can
share any tips with me or direct me to someone who would chat me
through it, I'd be eternally grateful!

Hiya,

I've only had 2 litters and 3 adults done. Ink was always rubbed in after the clamping.

Hi Chrissie

I personally have no experience of ear tattooing but my friends Viz
has had it done, and the ink was added after.
Have you googled ear tattoos? I rememeber watching a short video on
it, which may give you some tips.
We buy fresh pigs ears from our butcher for 20p each - these, I am
sure, would be good practice material and your dogs can get a treat
after!

Good luck with it.

Thanks all! I actually found a good demo video on the NDTR website - that had great tips for getting the tattoo right the first time. I feel much more confident about it now. And Claire, we had considered pigs ears, or a piece of leather, to try on first. A couple of phone calls later and we might have a butcher prepared to sell us a few raw ears for practise purposes ... not that easy to come by around here. If you can get them at all they are usually dehydrated or smoked to make them treats. In general all odd body parts are expensive in Canada - we used to get so much free stuff in England <sigh>.
