I have been reading some recent posts on here regarding flea & tick
control using garlic rather than chemicals and this really appeals to
me. Please can you let me know how much I should be giving my dog
(who is roughly 18.5kg) as I have done a quick search on the internet
and there seems to be all different strengths. I think I recall
seeing someone say 5mg per day.....but some of the products I have
seen are upto 5000mg!!! Any advice with this would be appreciated (as
I had to remove our first "horrible" tick of the year yesterday -
using our very usefull otom tick twister!!).

Thanks in advance

Hi Julie

As you probably know, I avoid chemicals/drugs like the
plague...neither of the 2 R's get ANYTHING unless it's absolutely
necessary & this includes no tick/flea "drug" treatments. My boys get
a crushed clove of garlic in their food every other day...they've
never had fleas. In addition, & to help them avoid ticks, I spray them
with either garlic oil (Dorwest Herbs do a spray) or Neem petguard
spray before a walk - you can get both from Nurturing by Nature. All I
do is spray one or other on to the boys necks, chests & down their
shoulder blades...simples!! And very effective!

I can't help with the capsule dosage but I seem to remember someone on
the forum saying that it's unlikely that healthy dogs will get fleas
unless (maybe) there are cats in the household - I hope someone will
correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi Julie
I buy the 2mg capsules from Tesco and put it in with their food in the
morning. In 5yrs they have only had one tick and that was only a month ago.
We take them all over the UK and they are BARF fed as well. I am sure lots
of other folk will give you info on what strength they use as well. But
these capsules work for my two.
Regards
Helgs

Thanks in advance

Julie

Hiya,

I use the same as Helg, 2mg and have done so for around 8 yrs. Never had a flea since and we have 4 cats, a hedgehog in the garden somewhere, live next to sheep, go in the woods most days and we are surrounded by deer of various breeds!! Never had a tick either!!

I only chemically worm with good quality products once a year as the garlic appears to play a part in that side of things also.

Thanks very much for your comments. Just one query...I have found 2mg
capsules in Tesco and a few other shops but they all seem to be
odourless. From what I understand this won't be any good as the odour
is what's needed to deter the critters?? Is this right???

Thanks

Julie

Julie,

Those are the ones we use. It's what the garlic does to the blood that put the fleas and ticks off and whatever it does to the digestive system that rids worms.
